I decided to burn 4 large piles of brush in my yard on saturday and i live on the side of a hill and tried to centralize the burn pile so i wasn't coming up or down the hill too much. i had hedge trimmers and a chainsaw, wore gloves and long sleeves (fricking poison ivy) and just settled in for the day.

i would hit points where i would literally sit down on the grass and for a good 5-6 minutes i could do absolutely nothing, my heart rate refused to subside and if i got up and tried to add to the fire, i got dizzy and it felt more like a 'dreamlike' state.

at some point i figured this was a bad idea with the raging heat and a raging fire and walk/crawled to the side door of the house and sat inside for about 20 minutes and felt pretty good.

however, once i got back out into it again, the exhaustion would overwhelm me almost immediately.

i'm not a puss..well..maybe a little bit of a puss..but i didn't feel it creeping up on me..i was just focused on clearing all the piles (i did) and kept telling myself i was just being a pussy.

i have been mostly dead since; my lower back and the backsides of my thighs have been burning and tight and i feel like absolute shite.

oh and yes i was trying to drink a frickton of water, but i think i may have gone too long initially before making myself a drink.

am i going to be ok? this is just like a hard workout right? i haven't done anything to permanently damage my physical health have i?

Welcome to getting old! I think most of us guys have a tendency to push it and just go balls-to-the-wall. I'd continue drinking extra water and liquids today for sure. I know exactly what you describe, even that dream-like state. I did it a few times installing an 18 wheeler load of sod in my backyard.

You'll be fine. Just sore and shitty till you recover.

I tend to nurse liquid IV now. I try to bring one to work on mondays after doing a lot of outside work in the heat. I'll cut it with extra water as it is too sweet/strong for my liking, but it helps me drink 3x the water I'd drink if it were just straight.

I sometimes go through three shirts on hot days. The next day I recover in the AC.

I was on rental property roofs trimming before the "hurricane." Twice I said woah when getting light headed.

I would try to get in a few cool showers or tub soaks as well. My go to has always been to drink a Gatorade/propel in between water and actually make an effort to eat clean for a few days.

Homemade fruit smoothie in the morning, salads with baked chicken for lunch, light dinner. Sometimes I would have to force myself to eat because when I am in recovery, I am not in the mood to eat.

It's better to be mostly dead than all dead. If you're all dead there is only one thing you can do.

How old are you? Might be a good time to go see a cardiologist.

hard to say without an actual medical exam/labs, but can't rule out the possibility that you have a case of rhabdomyolysis. This is basically breakdown of muscle tissue during periods of high exertion which can be exacerbated by heat and dehydration. Keep drinking a shite ton of water and consider ER visit if the pain in your legs/back progressively worsens or if your urine is dark red/brown.

CAD, I have gotten the same way doing yard work in the heat. Yes sounds like heat exhaustion. I did this a recently as last Thursday, I went to trim some branches on a Bradford pear and ended up cutting the whole thing down. Drank alot of water however, drinking straight water is not always the best as when you sweat you lose electrolytes and the water can help fulsh out your electrolytes as well. So in the future have a drink with some electrolytes as well.

When cutting with a chainsaw you don't realize how much energy you're using and combining that with bending down and hauling branches wears you out even faster (legs are a big muscle group). I'm 46 and have had cardiologist checkups recently (stress test negative) and I did this last summer as well. Make sure to take frequent breaks and load up on those electrolytes throughout the task at hand and you should be okay.

On another note if you were having a heart issue the symptoms of exhaustion do not get better by resting.

oh also heat exhausting will linger for a few days if bad. Headaches, body aches and feeling tired are all symptoms.

always. i can't seem to help myself because if i've gone to the trouble to fire up the chainsaw and commit to clearing limbs i'm going to look around for anything else that needs doing and tend to end up pissing my wife off when she looks outside at what's going on after a 'simple' project i promised her

thanks for the advice; sounds solid..i didn't think it was that hot so i'm a dummy for not having a sports drink or something with sodium and potassium. the heat will sneak up on you.

absolutely. food has tasted like shite since saturday; i like the idea of it, but when i start eating i'm almost instantly full or it tastes off.

grabbed an egg mcmuffin this morning and tossed it to the dogs after one bite which is what inspired me to make this thread.

let me tell you...that NEVER happens so i figured somethign must may be wrong.

This is why I like the liquid IVs. They're powdered, single serving so you can keep a box on hand without them going bad. My wife has started packing a fist-full of them for our vacation travel and hikes.

i think the worst was my wife was out shopping for dresses for my daughter's fall formal all day and when she got home i was mostly done and had already put away all the tools, cleaned up & even leaf blown the ashes and crap off the cars and driveway. she said 'why are you acting so tired? its just a few branches you needed to burn.'

how do you respond to that without looking like a pussy?

eta they were out having thai for lunch and drinking complimentary champagne and getting to play 'dress up' in the AC all day.

Been there.

Sucks getting old.

When I play golf or work in the yard, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

I use rotate LMNT and Gatorade powders in my water bottle.

Yep, pretty standard for me too when outside working when it's hot.

I do stay hydrated while working and as soon as I'm back inside the house I hook up with a tall glass of ice water, a cold towel to wipe down and sit at the kitchen table with a small fan on to cool down.

Then it's into the shower to clean up with fairly hot water and once clean, off goes the hot side and I let the cold just flow over me for a few minutes. That brings the body temperature down to very comfortable levels.

I find that I lose a lot more water through respiration as I've gotten older. In addition to heat exhaustion, be careful that you don't end up with heat rash.

Need to mix in some gatorade/liquid IV like others have said. Water is good, but need to replace electrolytes and everything.

I personally think you need to visit the dr.

My FIL was doing something similar except he was cramping really bad in his legs.

He had a near complete blockage in his heart. It was the left anterior (widow maker). The dr didn't know how he survived it.

I overdid it a few years ago and put myself into the hospital with heat exhaustion/dehydration. It took me up to two weeks to want to actually eat again once I got home. Don't drink just water though, drink something with electrolytes in it and eat some bananas to help get some potassium back into your system so your heart can regulate properly.

When I overheated about 3 years ago, I felt as you did, but the next morning I woke up and my heart rate and blood pressure were all over the map in the low range. I couldn't walk or concentrate and had to call my father to bring me to the ER. Ended up staying overnight and sucking down a few bags of IV fluid before they sent me home.

If you start feeling down and really weak get to the ER ASAP. Don't frick around just do it. Especially if start feeling like your heart is beating slower and your BP drops.

From what I understand from managing oilfield workers, it is a medical emergency and there is no such thing as being too careful to avoid overexposure(especially during acclimation) or overreacting to symptoms. Should have crawled into an ice bath or something.
