Any good White Beans recipes?

My friends are throwing a little party for me and making a jambalaya but I figured I’d make a pot of white beans or something to go with it. Anyone have any good recipes for someone who hasn’t cooked it before?

Something simple I usually go with while I'm at work
Dry pack of Great Northerners
(1) Chopped onion
(1) Chopped bell pepper
(2) Chopped celery
4-5 cloves of minced garlic
Couple bay leaves
Ham Hock (or pork of your choice)
Salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, some Tony's
Put it all in a crock pot with about 6-8 cups of water, put on low, usually about 6-8 hours it'll be right. serve over rice
And something particular with our family, out some Pico on the side with dat, grandma always did that now I can't eat without.

The above recipe is pretty much what I do when I cook them.
I use sausage and diced ham. I make homemade hams usually once a year and I vaccuum pack and freeze leftover chunks or miscuts for diced ham to use in white beans.
If you want something different... I love white beans with shrimp. Cook white beans with ham and/or sausage. Sautee shrimp in a separate pan and add the cooked shrimp to the white beans at the end of the cook.

I know boxed meals, etc are looked down upon here…but….
The camellia brand boxed seasoning (not with the brand, just the seasoning)…
Throw it , white beans, and preferred protein (usually hambone, diced ham, etc) and let it cook on low about 12 hours.
Hard to beat

I use this recipe all the time. Just yesterday, actually, but i also add a half stick of butter to help make it creamier.

That right there kills it and any whitebeans recipe that doesn't include fresh rosemary is a bad recipe.
Sorry.

2 tsp Olive Oil
1 lb Smoked Sausage
1 Chopped large onion
2 large Bay Leaves
1.5 cups Chopped carrots
1 cup diced celery
4 sprigs Fresh Thyme
1 long Sprig of Fresh Rosemary
1/4 tsp dried Oregano
4 cloves minced garlic
1/2 tsp Pepper
1tsp salt
6 cups Chicken Broth
1 lb dry navy beans
If you have an instant pot, use that. I'll be back later with the instant pot directions.

How many people will this recipe feed, and are you referring to the 1 lb bag of great northerns?
Posted on 9/19/24 at 3:20 pm to Tiger328
Yea just the 1lb bag. I would say 6-8, my wife, daughter and I, can eat on it at least twice, and still have a tad bit leftover. Putting beans over some rice can go a long way.

Kind of depends on who you're feeding. Men and teenage boys can hammer food if they are in the mood while women and children generally eat a good bit less per serving.
Plan on cooking for the potential appetites of the crowd you're cooking for, not the number of people.

Agreed, also just know these beans freeze really well if you cook too much. So down the road, you’ll have some quick night meals.

I’m making it as a side to go with jambalaya and probably bringing potato salad too. So should I do this recipe or double it? Going to be between 20-30 guys. It’s a diaper party thing they’re throwing for me for our first kid

I don't have a recipe and usually just wing it, but this sounds pretty much like what I do. I typically use chicken stock instead of water or if using water, put in a spoonful of chicken base.

Well, between the beans, white rice to go with them, jambalaya and potato salad, you have the "starch" part of the menu well taken care of.

lol I just always see people serving white beans with jambalaya so just assumed that’s what goes with it

You oughta tell one of them cats to fry some pork chops or some fish, then shits getting freaky.

Can you cook them for too long? I was going to throw them in crockpot tonight and just have them on low

Personally I think you can. Nothing worse than white beans that are a gummy paste sitting on top of the rice because it's too damn thick to run through. But you're using a crockpot so I don't know. Never went that route.
My Mamaw taught me her recipe years ago.
Saute onions and smoked hock in bacon grease. Add app 6 cups water and beans. Bring it to a boil then lower fire to a simmer. Add chunked salt meat and let it cook for a couple hours. Add a little water as needed.
Taste for seasoning when they're getting close. Add salt and black pepper to your taste. Smash a few beans against the side to cream them. I turn them off when they're slightly on the thinner side because they will thicken just sitting there. Fresh cut parsley to finish.
