Despite how rare they are, Athens has consistently been at the top of my SEC road trip list for years!

quote:

Renowned for its party scene and the birthplace of some hugely influential bands, this small city is quietly showing its bigger counterparts how a place can grow up while keeping its edge.

Some Americans may know the lore of Athens, Georgia, and its claims to fame. Located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains 70 miles north-east of Atlanta, the small city is home to the University of Georgia (UGA), the US's first state-chartered college established in 1785.

I’ve been twice, great trip. Near impossible to stay in Athens though without paying a fortune

Just got back from Columbia. That was number 12 of 15 for me. I have Norman, Austin, and Athens left on my list. LSU hasn’t made a trip to Athens since 2013. We were scheduled to go in 2025 before the conference expansion. Hoping they get us back on the schedule soon.

I think it used to be the coolest back in the day but it’s no longer.

I’d throw Fayetteville Arkansas in the mix

Louisiana’s best college town is Lafayette, home of the flagship University of Louisiana

I have been to Athens three times- 2009, 2013 and 2015. All were great games, great atmosphere, and I had great experiences.

I also went to the 2011/2019/2022 SECCGs, and the 2018 game in Baton Rouge. I always had positive interactions with Georgia fans.

2013 was as a Georgia Southern student - still a great time, had them on the ropes, 23-17 final. I did watch GSU beat UF in the Swamp. Hail Southern.

I'm supposed to hate Athens, but spent most of the last decade working with the locals in that area (including UGA) and always had a positive experience.

Went to LSU GA game in 2009. We tailgated at a big GA boosters tailgate. They had boiled shrimp and crabs setup in pirogue’s. There were 4-5 black dudes in white tuxes with red shirts serving everyone food, bloody Mary’s and mint juleps. Felt like a scene from a movie setback in the 50’s.

We love Fayetteville for the LSU game. Going this year for our 4th time in 11 years.
