Everyone is blaming the coaching concerning Harold Perkins not being so explosive as when he was a freshman. These are the main reasons he is not as effective.

1. Every team we play knows how explosive he is and are scheming against him to slow him down. When he was a freshman , most teams weren't that concerned about him.

2. He keeps putting himself in horrible positions during the play. Example , he jumps into a area as soon as he sees the RB move toward that area and then when the play goes to the opposite side, he just get blocked easily out of the way . He isn't reading the play very well.
Watch how " Weeks 40 does just the opposite. First he either jumps forward past the Oline men to put himself immediately into an open space to tackle the RB or QB. Secondly, if he don't get the jump , he makes sure he does not run into the blocking scheme.
40, just has great football knowledge.

Perkins needs to stop running himself into the blocking schemes.

Late last year they went back and put him on the outside to just free roam and the teams just shoved him high out of the way and ran right past him.

Then we put Harold in the Nickel position on some plays and again he was useless playing that spot.

Harold needs to read the offensive Line a lot better than what he is currently doing.

He needs to realize that he will not be an NFL middle linebacker and stop making Middle linebacker happen. He is a strong safety/nickel/STAR and that is where he will play in the NFL.

I agree there needs to be some coaching. But there also needs to be the realization on this board that he is not big enough to just line up on the edge and rush every down. Multiple times last year he did this and tackles push him up field and he is instantly eliminated from the play.

He needs to be at the star position.

He needs to be disciplined. How do you coach that? By keeping him out of games when he isn't? That would go over well with everybody including Perkins.

More of a traditional strong safety I would think, only because I am not certain how good his cover skills are. He seems adequate in that but not exactly good, I feel like the Nickel and Star position needs to have slightly better cover skills than a strong safety. But maybe he is better than I think at coverage.

This right here... Personally, Perk reminds me of the college version of Brian Urlacher from the Bears... In college he was really light (I think like 210 lbs) and the coach of the UNM Lobos made a position for him called "lobobacker." It was a hybrid safety/linebacker position. This was all under HC Rocky Long at the time. He used to play out of a nickle defense and the fifth DB was the Lobobacker position.

Watching LSU it seems like the Star position in the LSU defense is similar to this Lobobacker position the Lobos used to use. I definitely remember Brian Urlacher being really light while in college but he still tore it up. He became a top ten or so pick and he gained a ton of weight while in the league and moved to a more traditional Middle Linebacker.

What if he’s getting the coaching he needs, but he isn’t retaining or even understanding what he’s being taught? I gave him some benefit of doubt under House. But Baker is a LB coach. If Perkins can’t learn from him, then maybe he’s just not coachable.

I’m not saying this is true, I’m just saying it’s a possibility. I still think it’s too early in the season to make any significant determinations. We haven’t seen all of that this defense will put on the field yet.

No, it’s not the system or the Coaches anymore. It’s the Player. Could he play Strong Safety? Probably. For some reason his Coaches have felt that he’s a LB, which I believe his play over multiple seasons says he’s not. I’m not a Coach, but I think that’s the logical place for him to play. That being said, they will continue to force the narrative of him as a LB. Just my opinion.

You do know there are players in HS who because of their speed and size can dominate without needing a high FB IQ. And he did the same his freshman year but once they figured out how to scheme for him, which they did his last 2 freshman games where he didn't make an impact, It became necessary for him to be able to read an offense. I'm not sure he is there. Football IQ has nothing to do with coaching. You either have it or you don't. I rewatched USC and Nichols and he is constantly taking himself out of the play and is easily blocked because he doesn't read the offense well. Maybe it's as simple as that. And most of those 3rd downs they were getting to extend drives were right at him.

Actually, a majority of poster's are seeing HP's lack of filling gaps and aggressiveness, poor tackling and avoidance of physical play.

Everyone wants Perkins to be like Micah Parsons, but who I think he more resembles is Jabril Peppers, who’s a safety/linebacker hybrid.

Once a blocker ties up Perk, he's done. He just doesn't seem to be able to "break free" from a blocker. Seems like a strength issue to me.

I like the Safety / Star idea for him...
