Hard to believe the numbers in this article:

Investopedia

Am I correct that this means 1 in 100 earn over 800k annually? 1 in 1000 earn over 3M?

I don’t know anyone personally that makes this much and I probably know 1000 people.

Cleared 800 once. It was amazing. Now about 300-400. Still good, just not 800.

I believe it. You get into the tech world, big law, finance, etc and there are many that make that.

By and large, you'll need to own a business. Very few salaried workers will make that unless CEO level.

Closing in on the 800 mark this year. Hoping to clear a million next year. You either need to own a business, be a partner at a big law firm, or be an executive at a large company.

1 in 1000 making 3m or more I don't think is accurate.

Or work at a company that the stock went crazy.

My wife got 2900 shares of stock as a sign on bonus one year. Then she would get 700 to 900 options per year and 170 to 270 shares per year. Took a while to vest but the stock is over $800 a share now.

All the options were under $67. When it vested you could have some pretty good years of income for several years in a row.

Relatively easily doable for a dual physician household. We grossed 1.1 last year.

You're assuming these people are spread out proportionally.

Ask an average person in silicon valley or Manhatten how many people they know that makes that much. They will know plenty.

These numbers are significantly more impressive in a place like Louisiana or Alabama.

Article is about individual income but regardless that is an insane household income. Congrats.

I just saw that.

But it actually says 1% starts at $682,000. $800 is the average.

They should now do how much the top 1% earners pay in taxes on average

You might. About 15 years ago, there was a guy that worked for some random BR firm called performance contractors…and his quarterly wage submission crashed the entire LWC UI system.

Good point. Every partner in a major NY law firm is easily clearing 800k.

It’s also just a snapshot. There are many people that for various reasons are in the top 1% one year but won’t get back there again. It happens.

There are much fewer individuals who are consistently there every year.

I know doctors, lawyers, and a few execs that are probably in that income range.

I know business owners that make that kind of money (owners of mid sized construction companies, various manufacturing companies, and such).

Are there also people that aren’t in it but will be next year? You know. Snapshot and all.

Are we talking individuals or households. Two working adults can get there without being CEO…

Great point. Very difficult to be at that level without rare circumstances.

Corporate world, I think deferred comp can drive it, especially with a bit of stock growth.

Not a whole lot of people getting a base salary of $800K…even at the CSuite that’s not a guarantee. Bonuses and long term incentives cross that threshold though.
