John Salley Mentions Don Redden In Interview

I listened to a recent Adam Carolla podcast and John Salley was a guest. Adam had a sports fanatic co-host and the guy was going on and on about how great the 1986 Georgia Tech team that Salley was on was. They asked Salley who beat them in the NCAA tournament and he said “LSU.” He said LSU had a small forward who took over and killed Tech. He remembered Don by his last name and also remembered how Don passed away before he got to play in the NBA.
Not really much of a story but it was nice to hear John Salley, who went on to win so many NBA titles, give props to Don by name 35 years after the fact.

I loved Don. Nobody used the glass like Don. He was BMOC in 86 for sure. What a ride that was.

I was at the UNLV game in late Feb of 88. Don walked up the stairs right by me and I gave him a Geaux tigers. He died 2 weeks later. It was a sad day. Went to a ton of games back then. My parents had season tickets and my mom loved basketball. Went with her a bunch. Good times!

I had a history class with Don in one of the big rooms in the basement of Allen Hall. He’d rarely show up and when he did, he’d sit in the back row and read a Sports Illustrated magazine. One day he showed up and the professor, Dr Sidney Cohen, announced “Look! Mr Redden is gracing us with his presence today.” To his credit, Don just leaned further into the SI and didn’t respond.

Was a great interview and that part was really great/interesting.
Just fyi, the co-host is Dave Dameshek, formerly of the NfL network. He writes comedy and runs in the same circles as Corolla. Bill Simmons etc. For years, somebody at Super Bowl media day would ask players if they considered it a “must win” game to see who answered seriously. That’s him. Super funny/smart.

I ran into Don’s dad, Mr. Levi Redden, about 6 years ago in a tire store in West Monroe. I told him the story about being a 7th grade boy when Don died and changing my number to #44 for the rest of junior high and high school career. He told me Don is buried near Pistol Pete (they died 2 months apart and were close) and no matter how old you get, you never get over losing a child.

One of the best pure shooters to ever play college basketball. Could have his back to the goal and and would jump back and turn in the air and be perfectly square to the goal and nothing but net. Such a shame he died so young.

I grew up with Don , played with him at Ouachita HS in Monroe. He also worked for my dad while in college.
I tore me up when he died. We had know each other our entire lives.
Funny story....that guy could fall asleep faster than anyone I have known. We would leave together while working and he would fall asleep in 2 min.
His dad just died a couple of years ago. Now he is also buried by Don and Pistol Pete.

You must be thinking Oklahoma in the ‘87-‘88 season. That UNLV game was in ‘89 and Redden was gone by then.

I work at Nicholls State and Ricky is a stand up guy. I use to go talk to him all the time. One of my all time favorites as well. I remember that sad day like it was yesterday when Don Redden passed away. I remember that Georgia Tech game again like it was yesterday playing John Salley. I didn't think we had a chance in that game. Tech had a very good team. RIP 44 and all the Tigers who have died way too young! LSU sure has had it's share of young athletes passing away!
