In the event of said event (EMP, Katrina type hurricane, an actual plague, major cyber attack on the power grid, etc). What type of NV would you want?

You'd probably want to conduct most recon and dangerous operations at night; therefore, you wouldn't want your NV permanently attached to a firearm.

If you could only have one NV device, what would it be

Ferriday bag?

An EMP is the least of the things I'm worried about. No one would waste a bomb to knock out power in the 'Sip.

they won't

but if i had to pick, a set of quad-nods but i don't have $50k to drop on them.

TRex arms has some PVS-14 that are reasonably priced.

if you want budget lasers/illuminators, Somogear appears to have some GWOT clones (PEQ-2 / PEQ-15) without the GWOT prices.

You can spend $400-$40,000. Your budget is going to determine what you get. I have a 3rd Gen PVS-14. It’s good enough to survive in a SHTF scenario. You can find them used for $2200

I protect my eyes like they're my nuts. The only thing preventing me from wearing an eye patch on my non dominant is sunglasses.

Thermal is what you want. If someone else using regular night vision your ir light will look like a spot light

Lemmee tell y’all about a SHTF.

Anyone who is actively prepping, storing, preparing, all this BS is gonna get anally raped in front of their families when the real bad folks come take the shite they’ve been so preciously guarding.

Best thing any society can do is to peacefully coexist as best we all can.

Because I promise you- the cat wanting night vision and all this GI Joe gear is gonna crap his trousers when someone actually sticks a gun barrel in his mouth.

See Russia vs. Afghanistan for reference.

Most of your response was non sensical, but any society is three missed meals from chaos. No matter how peaceful you want to be those around us will get violent.

The left has been perpetrating the slowest shtf event in history here. No adversary is going to waste munitions here while the left is doing work.

Yes the extremely ill prepared people for everyday life much less a SHTF scenario will become so bad arse they will be able to just stroll right in and stick a gun in someone's mouth who is reasonably prepared for said event.

Why not get thermal over NV?

Why wouldn’t you want it attached to your firearm?

I think a thermal would be the best, and it would be practical for use now, on hogs and coyotes if you wanted it. It would also make it easier to hunt for food in a true SHTF scenario.

But when it comes to preparing for SHTF, I’d want to make sure I had a lot of other things checked off my list before I worried about that. I think an emergency situation that requires NV would be pretty unlikely.

99% of the time you wouldn't be looking down your rifle. You be on recon missions, gathering and scouting. If you have both, that be great, but I'd want independent NV if I could only have one.

I think an EMP is very unlikely, and it probably would work as well as in books and the movies. A prolonged power outage, that affects a large portion of the country, due to cyber/physical attack is something we all need to be prepared for. Power outages due to natural disasters are likely going to be localized.

So what kind of recon should we be planning on doing at night during a prolonged power outage?

ETA: I’m trying to understand how asking a question gets downvotes.

100% there is absolutely no direct military threat to the homeland. Russia can't whip a little country next door. Most of China's economy depends on the US.

I'm still worried about terrorism though, they believe they are fighting for their God.

Set of nods with a coti would be the best way to go.

Both systems alone have drawbacks depending on the circumstances
