It’s crazy how difficult it is to fire people from white collar jobs

We have a worker. Been non-existent. Told his manager. His manager understands but pretty much “can’t fire him because if we did, hr won’t allow us to hire anyone to replace him” so better get less than the bare minimum out of him rather than absolutely nothing.

This is like the 3rd time I’ve seen HR do this at multiple companies.

It’s really demoralizing

It's incredibly easy to fire people.

You either have worked for shite companies or you're lying about 50% of your post.

Or both...

i don’t think this is true at all given what enabling low performers can do to your culture

In LA, your arse would be living in a tent.

it’s pretty tough to get fired at my company, especially if you’re of “kidd glove” status

Not being able to backfill is not an HR issue

I definitely worked for a previous company that just didn’t believe in firing people. Fairly demanding company too. As a result, yes, workers were very demoralized

Is different than HR not allowing people to get fired.

Some companies/managers are afraid to fire people because it will be more work for them, but that's different than HR saying they can't because then they won't be allowed to hire anyone else.

The OTHER thing...is that people always blame HR, but these are not HR-centric decisions. The executive team makes the decisions (sometimes with HR input), but most of the time HR just carries out the orders.

Yeah, HR isn’t deciding on headcount or firing decisions.

Managers may be hesitant to fire someone due to possibly losing headcount, but that decision comes from executive leadership not the manager or HR.

I’m fully willing to understand the situation may be more nuanced than I realize. However, I don’t give a shite what the actual reason is. It still sucks

the DEI culture is strong where I work, and a lot of terminations are initiated by HR, in fact they have a policy of allowing anonymous accusations to where the “accused” doesn’t have the right to face his/her accuser and is pretty much deemed guilty until proven innocent, in a lot of cases it has nothing to do with job performance, in fact many people in positions of making performance evals are reluctant to fall on their sword to give a bad eval to any of the “protected” groups, they will pass it on to someone else

Why would any need to replace him? You’re obviously getting shite done without him even existing, so save the money and move on.

Then it's simple...you work for a shitty company.

I worked for one for a while - it sucks.

We now have our own and those experiences led us to do things 180 degrees from the shite experiences we had in the past.

That’s like saying “it’s ok, the skyscraper was still built, doesn’t matter we didn’t have an architect”

It’s getting tough to fire somebody just for sucking at their job in the plant now. They have to royally frick something up or get caught being unsafe. Otherwise HR just claims “they’re not being adequately trained” and just moves them to a different shift. At least that’s how it is where I’m at

I fire poor employees even if I may not get the position back. Bad employees destroy productivity for multiple good employees for the morale issue you mentioned.
