Perhaps the biggest announcement coming out of Opening Night Live was Microsoft’s decision to launch MachineGames' hotly anticipated Xbox game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on PlayStation 5 a few months after it launches on Xbox and PC.

I guess Uncle Phil wasn’t seeing large enough gains in Game Pass to warrant this game being an exclusive so they had to open it up to Sony for extra sales.

Or they talked about this already almost a year ago and it's actually happening.

Square going multi platform. Industry has changed, have to adapt.

This was their entire purpose behind buying up studios. They said it repeatedly. MS has leveled the playing field. It's not like they've stopped releasing or announcing exclusives. I hope they do timed exclusivity with every game they plan to eventually release on PlayStation.

Part of me wonders if at least some of this decision is related to the FTC case that's still ongoing. The government clearly indicated in the injunction hearings that PlayStation's timed exclusivity, from the FTC's perspective, wasn't enough of a competition concern for MS to warrant the purchases of ABK, Bethesda, etc. It's hard for me to imagine that ongoing case not having at least some effect on decisions like these. Like MS does some timed exclusives and can respond to any gov arguments with "but the government argued this practice isn't anti-competitive!" They're certainly not going to risk having to unravel the merger over a few game releases.

I'm sorry this is just not true. MS acquired these studios/companies to make exclusives games and boost gamepass and console sales. That's why Hifi Rush, RedFall, and Star field where made exclusive. But it didn't work the way they wanted that's why Phil got on that podcast and said they can't out console PlayStation and Nintendo and why there CEO removed Gamepass growth from his bonuses. If Xbox was selling like the PS5 they would not be porting these games over.

Whether it’s necessitated by sales numbers or altruism, exclusives suck for all gamers and I’ll take any crack in that door I can get.

But they are making exclusives and are boosting Game Pass sales. I don't recall them ever stating console sales as their goal. Seems they've been trying to expand from consoles for quite a while now actually. That doesn't mean they want to be a third-party publisher. It seems clear they want to sell Game Pass and work toward making it a service that can be used on multiple platforms. They've been saying for years that they want Game Pass on "every device." That doesn't mean every console; that means every TV, every phone, every computer, etc.

Game Pass is currently available on some Samsung TVs and Amazon Fire TV, VR headsets, phones, PCs, and Xbox consoles. They're very clearly expanding where this can be used and are very clearly not trying to compete in console sales. They've said multiple times that they do not plan to stop selling Xboxes because that is how some people will always want to play, but they view Game Pass as a way to expand reach beyond just the console space.

ETA: Even the ABK purchase was clear evidence of this. The problem with people on this board is they weren't paying attention and didn't believe what Microsoft said all along, and you all are now still applying your preconceived notions of what you thought Microsoft was doing so you can pretend they changed their minds instead of just admitting they're doing what they said they were going to do all along.

They stated, repeatedly and even under oath, that the primary drivers of the ABK purchase were the addition of physical assets beyond the gaming space (not just gaming IP) and the ability to break in to the mobile gaming space that was basically nonexistent in Microsoft's portfolio prior to the purchase. That is obviously not a play at expanding console sales. It's a play at expanding into a much larger gaming market (the mobile gaming space) to compete with the Google and Apple stores.

This reads like a post made by someone who doesn't understand what the adaptive controller is.

The only attachment to a controller that I'm aware of MS releasing this week is a one-hand controller attachment for the Xbox adaptive ("disability") controller. You know, for people with only one hand.

Games coming to PS5 is awesome. Why restrict games just because of the plastic box you chose to buy? Hopefully, every company comes to this realization and start releasing games on all consoles and computers. It does not help any customer when games are exclusive to one console or another. It does benefit a customer when games are available on as many platforms as possible. You should be cheering this news as its good for you as a customer.
