In the 1990s Thomas Dolby had started a multimedia company and was presenting his new application at the conference I was at in San Franciscob in the afternoon one day.

I left after the morning session and went to a tower records store maybe a mile away and lol and behold there was almost no Thomas Dolby cassettes or CDs..I did manage to find a Greatest Hits.

Ran back to the conference just in time to catch his presentation and after it was over I went up to him and told him he was my favorite musician and would he sign my favorite CD?

Then I pulled it out and he rolled his eyes while I struggled to get the shrink wrap off.

He got a kick out of it because it was obvious what I had done.

Was working at Alvin's Island in Destin around 1993-4ish. Some smelly dude came through browsing the shitty souvenir t-shirts. We chatted briefly about the awful designs that sold big and he wandered out into the day.

Co-worker came rushing over to ask if I got an autograph. Apparently it was Adam Duritz. Counting Crows had apparently played at La Vela (or maybe Spinnaker) the night before and they were cruising through town on the way to the next gig.

CSB.

I interrupted Jim James’ phone call with his girlfriend stating I disagreed with Ken Wilber. He hung up on her and we talked for the next 20 minutes about whether absolute truth exists.

Met the drummer for Kings of Leon at a bar on Broadway after a Preds game about 5-6 years ago. Bought him a beer and asked if we could take a quick picture and he was friendly and agreed. He asked me if I was coming the the New Year's Eve show in a few days and I told him I would never be caught dead on Broadway during NYE....unless he could hook me up with some cool VIP access or something.

He said sure, how many do you need? Gave me 4 VIP passes and pre/after party invites and we had a fan-fricking-tastic time.

Then about 2 years later I was leaving another Preds game and saw the lead singer for KoL outside a different bar having a cigarette. I walked passed him and casually said "Hey, Kings of Leon" and he responded "Yeah". I said "Cool" and kept on walking.

HA!

I met Jim James at Robert’s in 2008 and was excited to tell him I loved him in the song he played for Dylan’s biopic in I’m Not There. Except I couldn’t remember the song. And he had to remind me of the name of it. I was drunk. Nice dude, though.

Yeah, meeting famous people I bank on the usual drunken approaches being “dude I listened to your song and it helped me break up with my girlfriend and pass a math test!” That’s easy to shrug off.

So I go with the antithetical approach and it grabs their attention.

CAD - to piggyback off your story, here is some musical related cell phone technology history.

I recently listened to an interview Richard Blade (Sirius - 1st Wave) had with Thomas Dolby. During the 80's "new wave" of electronic music, Dolby was on top of the world with hits including Hyperactive and She Blinded me with Science. Within 10 years, Metal and Grunge had taken over the music scene and Dolby was struggling to book concerts and sell music.

Dolby developed a software company Beatnik, so he could produce and record music for others in the industry. Around 1992, Dolbly was playing a small venue in Oslo, Norway and by coincidence, a Nokia music engineer was in attendance. Impressed with what he had heard, a meeting was arranged between Dolby and Nokia executives. The rest is history as Dolby made millions with his multi-year contract to develop ring tones and provide Nokia with the software that was installed in all their cell phones. NOKIA cell phone rings circa. 2000

Met John Higginbotham (JJ Grey & Mofro) at the Republic in New Orleans. Thought he was just some random stranger named John standing beside me at the back of the room, we BS'd about music for a bit, I realized he knew his stuff and joked he outta get up on stage next. He chuckled and then sure as shite got on stage and jammed about 2 songs later. That's when I realized my boy John was actually JJ Grey.

When I was a kid, maybe 12 or 13, I was at Disney's Beach Club Resort and sitting in the lobby in a chair waiting for everyone to come down. This huge dude sits right next to me with long black hair. He just says "How is it going?" I say "I'm good". He says "nice accent where are you from?" I say "New Orleans" he says "I love that place" and that's that, he's just sitting next to me.

My cousin comes down into the lobby, walks up to us and all of a sudden asks "Are you Gene Simmons?". He says " Yes I am". He then took pics with our whole family

beatnik! that was it!!

and you are correct; the reason it was so hard to find his music is...that 80s sound was dead in the early/mid 1990s when i was at that conference. i'm happy to hear things worked out for him; growing up we think of musicians as GODS who have more money than anyone on the planet so when we read stories about the lead singer of Men At Work going back to his teaching job..it feels 'strange'.

I was working on some rich dude's house in the Seattle area when he came strolling through with his best friend. I ended up having a nice chat with his friend, Steve Miller.

I was working on another rich dude's house in Seattle some years later when he came home around lunchtime and asked to join me on the deck. Dave Mathews turned out to be a normal guy with a normal family living in a pretty non-descript house in the Wallingford neighborhood where many of my friends live. He gave me backstage tickets to his shows at The Gorge for my tip.

I worked on Eddie Vedder's house, too, but that would be a small novel to write. Let's just say it was one of the funnest jobs of all time.

I've also dined with George Porter Jr, John Gros and Camille Baudoin (The Radiators) at Seithers in Harahan.

I've met and played with many old dead blues guys over the years due to my skills as a harmonica and gittar player.

My buddy bumped into Jay Weinberg at a show in Nashville a few weeks ago. Having forgotten what happened, my buddy mentioned that he was surprised he had time to get away and go to other shows considering he was the drummer for Slipknot. He said that Jay got visibly annoyed and awkward and he walked away Haha

I’ve met Evan Dando (The Lemonheads) in 1993. He was standing right next to me watching the opener of his own show.

70’s, I was in the car parked outside of my dad’s office building which faces the backside of Municipal Auditorium in Nashville. I looked over at the auditorium and saw a tour bus parked outside. Curious, I walked over and was checking the cool bus out when Nancy Wilson stepped off and said hello. She was beautiful and very kind to this grade school kid.

I'll give you one. Eddie likes to do monkey man shite like climb around on stuff. He installed a bat pole in the house, and when it was time to have the party for all the dudes who worked on the joint he got some kegs and BBQ and put them in the basement. What could possibly go wrong with a bunch of drunken hammerhead construction dudes, a rock star, pulled pork, ribs and a bat pole? Thankfully, no bones were broken.

Being a GI in Europe, got to meet a bunch of bands.

Partied with Pantera in Nuremberg on the vulgar tour. Parked behind the club they were playing at and the bus pulled in. Had a half a gallon of jack sitting on a Texas flag on the hood of the car. Instant friends and backstage after the show. Killed it till well after midnight.

Next night was Alice in Chains in the same club. They allowed us to stay after the show but wouldn't let us backstage. All they wanted to know was where they could find drugs. Grilled by half a dozen stage hands. Like a competition to be the first to find drugs. Lol. Still, got Layne Stanleys autograph...

Met WASP playing a club in Frankfurt after the show. Blackie Lawless is like, 6 ft 5 or something. Fkn rock star of a tall dude

Met the Chili Peppers in Frankfurt on the blood sugar tour. We had no tickets yet, so we were looking for a place to piss all the beer. Found an open gate by a building and followed it to what turned out to be where all the buses were parked. Walked through the back and right then the Rollins band were doing sound check. Peppers did sound check after. We sat on the edge of the stage while they sound checked. Hung out with John after as he was curious why we wanted his autograph. He hated the attention. Played nurf football with Chad and Anthony after on the stadium floor. 7 on 7. I got picked by Anthony, lol. Was a blast. Saw the show for free. Spent ticket money on hookers...

Guns and Roses were playing an air defense sattelite field we worked at just up the hill from my apartment in Wursburg. Went up there every day while they set up during the week. Ended up getting credentials for the show cause we were Army and shite. Hung out on stage and huddled by all the beer coolers. Stayed for soundchecks for Nine Inch Nails (their first tour) Faith No More and GNR. Slammed beers with Slash.

Met Robert Trujillo who was with Suicidal Tendencies opening for Metallica in Nuremberg. He caught that we were GI's and surfed the same break as my buddy from California. Got to watch the show side stage. Got hit by a bunch of trash when The Cult were playing. Germans wanted nothing to do with The Cult sandwiched between ST and Metallica, so it was a sea of trash being thrown on stage. Was kind of embarrassing, actually, but it was Lars who scheduled the bill.

Met the Beastie Boys in Cologne for a minute. Got high 5's and where you from talk, but that was it

Good times

Opened for Danzig in 1988 on his first solo tour after the Misfits. Also opened for The Cramps on their stay sick tour in 1990. Was fun to hang out with Poison Ivy and Lux backstage. Fugazi were peace punks so no alcohol backstage. They had a massive fruit spread and I ate my weight in bing cherries at that show. The Circle Jerks were the coolest bunch of guys I've ever played with. Opening shows also included New Model Army and The Jesus Lizard.

Met Gavin Rossdale (Bush) outside his tour bus, and Midge Ure (Ultravox and Live Aid) after a show. Also met GG Allin the day he got out of one of his jail stints and did shots of whiskey with him at a local underground venue. Also bought El Duce (The Mentors) a shot for signing an album.
