PayPal Wire Transfer Scam

Just want to share the great news and I’ll keep it short. I was the victim of a PayPal wire transfer scam and lost over 14K in May. Filed a police report with Livingston Sheriff’s Office and was then contacted by a detective and provided him with documentation of the event. He got right on it and took quick action. The money showed back up in my account this morning. The movie the Beekeeper scam was very similar, a lot of it was almost word for word. Just want to post the Livingston Sheriff Detectives are top notch, I can’t Thank them enough.

I used to get PayPal refund text all the time. I just report the number as junk on my iPhone and they have slowed down substantially.
When I first received one of these text I immediately logged on to my PayPal account on my laptop and reviewed all my account activity. There was no reason for me to receive the refund the text was requesting. I immediately knew it was a scam.
I don't know how the scam works but I believe in order to receive said refund you have to provide your PayPal information to "transfer the refund" to your PayPal account. Once you hand over your PayPal info, you're screwed.

You were not scammed, you were stupid.
Venmo, Paypal, Zelle, etc. for me are all linked to an account with no money in it. If I use it, I transfer the needed money in.
Be a hard target people.

With the scammer text that I report as junk, I also receive onlyfans type scammy text with naked women. I just delete those and not report them as junk. Those text seem to improve my mood.

Got a Paypal money request email from someone I didn't know. Knew not to click the link and logged into Paypal and the request is there, cancelled transaction. The next day another request from someone else. Logged into Paypal to check that one, clicked on the request and it had a note " If you don't recognize this request call this number. They answered Customer Service or something of that nature and a offered to fix my Paypal. I (feel like an idiot) let them take over my computer. Got some blue screens off and on. Had me log into my bank account and it shows the money request had been paid and they would refund the transaction. They put the refund money in but way to much and said they needed it back. Did a wire transfer to give them their money back. My bank account screens showed the transactions and they were all fake. I was taking screen shots of all the screens including the account it went to.
My computer was infected and had to have it debugged.
I feel very lucky to have recovered the funds.

My SIL had an air message on her laptop warning her to not reboot her computer....But to call 1 800 looks like Microsoft. She called her bank before they drained her accounts.
The scam of 12 years ago was a snail mail letter saying you won the Home Depot thing WITH A CHECK that bank managers said was good...
Many are too embarrassed to report these scams to their AG and go to their local post office if snail mail was involved-and they get away with it.
Another scam studies what people put online to easily stalk info about them---- or their kids. Then they use circumstances to say your son or daughter is in jail in Mexico/ beach resorts, and so on.... 'send us/me money. 'They even can replicate the kids/teenagers voice saying, 'Mom, help me.'
Another friend who is elderly had her entire identity hacked. They signed into her Netflix type accounts and made profiles even.
They started by mimicking her facebook page.
I am so glad you got your money back. Everyone should find the movie The Beekeeper on their grandparents TVs and make them watch it...

Wow. I could be an arse here, but we are going to assume you never make that mistake again.

It is easy to get sucked up into it. People believe 1-800 customer service in old school thinking. But I get your point.
