Wiki 1936 LSU Football

The team was rated No. 1 by the contemporary Houlgate System and presented with the Foreman & Clark national championship trophy.[2][3]

The Tigers' game at home against Southwestern Louisiana saw the Tigers score 52 points in a half, which ranks second in school history, and 93 points in a single game, which is the most points scored by LSU in a game.

Did they even have the forward pass then?

Yes the forward pass had been around for 30 years then.

We lost to an undefeated Santa Clara team to finish the season ranked No 2. So in theory, we shouldn’t claim it. That’s like claim the 2011 title.

But this doesn’t take away that most of Bama’s titles are bogus.

1908 should absolutely be claimed

This one seems somewhat legit - and it’s funny you mention 2011 because I’m all for claiming it. We still finished 1st in one of the computer models which is good enough for me given the illegitimate mulligan.

1936 was the first year of the AP. Minnesota was ranked first in the AP (and seven other NCAA-designated major selectors, Billingsley Report, Dickinson System, Dunkel System, Helms Athletic Foundation, Litkenhous, National Championship Foundation, and Poling System.)

The NCAA only recognizes the AP winner that year. Unless we want to start claiming mythical championships like another school I can think of and despise, I would say we should claim 1908 but not a season in which we lost the Sugar Bowl to end the season.

Also of note, the Houlgate system selected Alabama as a "national champion." in 1941. Alabama was 9-2 that year. The consensus champion Minnesota was 8-0. Alabama finished fifth in the SEC that year and was ranked #20 in the final AP poll. That is one of the mythical "national championships" everyone makes fun of them for claiming.

The 2011 LSU Tigers have more a claim to the championship that year than many of Alabama's.

Good thing TD wasn’t around then. In the 1937 Sugar Bowl both teams combined for 16 turnovers.

Can we not try to be like Bama? Most people openly make fun of their ridiculous claims. Why would we care to do that. Leave history alone and move focus to actually winning future championships.

agreed.

It's pathetic that we're chasing 100 year old championships just to compete with Alabama. It's 2024 people - let it go.

The Bama obsession needs to stop.

No. I remember when the forward pass was invented. It was right after the Charley McClendon era.

We should claim this but especially 08.

There was no SEC in 1908. The SEC formed in 1932.

But the national championships were awarded before bowl season at that time. So we would be following the rules if we claimed it.

I agree completely with your point about Houlgate being a questionable basis for making a NC claim based on that system picking 9-2 Alabama in 1941, but I would take issue with the Sugar Bowl impacting the legitimacy of an NC claim. Back then the last polls were pre-bowl and most lists of NCs are based upon those pre-bowl results in that time period.

The Rants BREC team has as much claim to NCs as many of the Gumps teams.

Add 1908 and 1936 to the flagpole. Bama and Tennessee would do it in a heartbeat.
