I wonder if they are allowed to see anything outside of the place they’re competing and the place where they are staying? I would think they probably have handlers who control everything they do and see.

Why doesn't Best Korea send its greatest athlete, Little Rocket Man? He can run the 100 yard dash in 8.5 seconds.

It’s pretty crazy to think about North Koreans with international access. At what point did they learn it was all a lie? And now they have to perpetuate that lie or likely face serious consequences for themselves and their families still in the country.

There’s a podcast about the North Korean criminal hackers from the BBC. Its first season was really good.

Do they get to go to the World’s or is it just Olympics?

The luxuries they experience in Paris have to open their eyes if they don’t get to go to World’s. But yes, I guarantee they have handlers who keep them quiet and have a watch on them when they get back to NK to keep the propaganda up. They may even threaten them with harm to their family if they say how great the outside world is.

Such a bizarre situation, this little trip to Paris is the greatest time of their athletes lives. Imagine what you have to go back to, like taking a Time Machine back to the 40s when you go home

If they stay at the Olympic Village they think France has the same standard of living as Best Korea.

Paris has some fancy buildings like Pyongyang.

I always imagined that there is some some formal banquet one night at each Olympics with the North Koreans and the Cubans that is hosted by China and Russia (who alternate picking up the check).

They would need handlers just to keep the South Koreans from fricking with them. I often wonder who hates each other more, Israelis vs Palestinians or north vs South Koreans.

north vs South Koreans
It's possible the North Koreans hate the South Koreans just out of their brainswashed ignorance, but I am not aware of it going in reverse. Quite the contrary - many South Koreans remain distraught after decades of being cut off from their own relatives.

In no world do I think it's analogous to Israel/Palestine.

Of course most South Koreans hate the political elite of North Korea, but that's obviously assumed.

I work with a ton of South Koreans. Many of them former military. The hatred is real. They drag North Koreans every chance they get. I lost track of how many of them have this as their computer background. I see it on every teams meeting

It’s also possible that many Olympians come from elite families in North Korea, so they personally may avoid the extreme poverty.

I believe several North Koreans study abroad annually. Mostly in the countries you expect, but some even in western Europe. Kim Jung Un spent part of his formative years in Switzerland.

Years ago a Hong Kong paper wrote a story about a North Korean fleeing after attending a math competition in China.

That's hatred of the regime or of the ordinary citizen/prisoner?

I'm sure their families are hostages.

Talk about a minimum carbon footprint. It seems like N Korea is leading the charge against climate change. No wonder they are loved by the Film Actor's Guild.

Both, but i do think they feel a little bad for the average citizen. That doesn't stop them from talking mad shite about them though.

Only Olympics, they don't take part in the Worlds.

North Koreans that defect and make it to SK have long suffered from pretty severe bias and enmity from South Koreans

Was watching women's diving and the announcers were talking about the Chinese and N Korean divers. They didn't pull many punches when they were giving the divers backgrounds and talking about them being "conscripted" at age (very young ages, 7 or 8) and taken to academies to train.

Meaning the State goes out and identifies young prospects, takes them from their families, and grinds and molds them. There is a reason no countries can compete with the Chinese diving teams, it's basically forced labor.

They are probably staying in the Olympic Village and think it's a 5 star resort. The ones they send are brainwashed and their family would be killed if they thought about defecting

You could look at Cuban and Soviet history when it comes to deflectors. They had handlers but could get away if they put any thought into it. North Korea doesn't just take defections out on your immediate family. They take it out on your aunts, uncles, 2nd cousins, and family who haven't been born yet. Whether you defect during a sports competition or by sneaking put of the country, you are sentencing generations of your family to labor camps.
