Trend spotting in cinema is a hazardous pursuit. Sometimes a movie is just a movie. “Twisters,” however, is emblematic of a clear shift in Hollywood: After a period of openly using movies to display progressive values, sometimes with success at the box office (“Barbie”) and often not (“Strange World,” “The Marvels,” “The Color Purple,” “Dark Waters”), studios seem to be heeding a message that many ticket buyers — especially in the center of the country — have been sending for a long time: We just want to be entertained, no homework attached.

Put bluntly, it amounts to an attempt by Hollywood to bend to red state audiences.

“It’s a reflection of economics and the desperation of the film industry,” said Corby Pons, a movie marketer who focuses on the faith community and is based in Nashville. “We want you to attend our movies. We need you to attend our movies.”

Disney, which owns seven studios, including Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and 20th Century, has put its creative ranks on notice. “We have to entertain first — it’s not about messages,” Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive, said at a conference late last year. “I don’t really want to tolerate the opposite.”

Paramount describes its current focus as “all-audience, flat-out entertaining films.” Those include “Gladiator II,” one of the most-anticipated movies of the fall. “Many moviegoers don’t want agendas or Hollywood telling them what they should be thinking,” said Chris Aronson, Paramount’s president of domestic distribution. He cited “IF,” a feel-good PG movie that came out in May about a girl with imaginary friends, as one that “resonated strongly” with ticket buyers in the heartland.

Universal’s approach to “Twisters” involved positioning the movie as escapist fun and studiously avoiding sociopolitical issues. The last thing Universal wanted was a film that doubled as a climate-change scolding, which would likely repel conservative ticket buyers. “We couldn’t afford to overlook any audience,” said Michael Moses, chief marketing officer at Universal. “With every decision, it was about how can we include and not exclude.”

Maybe swaths of Hollywood aren't allergic to money, after all.

How about Paramount focus on fixing their dogshit app? You can’t watch anything without multiple crashes and the menu loads so slowly.

Don’t think Kathleen Kennedy got Bob’s memo.

This is just another time they’ll say this and do the opposite

The occasional Twister, Mission Impossible, or Deadpool aren’t going to cut it. They need a few years of stringing together non-agenda movies before I’ll believe them

The funny thing is I know plenty of folks who wouldn't be considered conservative that feel the same way.

Not everything has to be Oscar-esque. Most people, regardless of political affiliation, just want a good story and to be able to step away from the world for a bit.

Stories like this demonstrate why trying to remove "political discussion" from this board makes no sense.

They will do more of them since they see it working.

And then they will start to try and gently put "the message" in there again

And then they will blast in there with no lube

Its a cycle

Or political discussion could be held on the poli board, as Chicken hath commanded

Many movies have had political undertones as long as I can remember, but the modern messages are presented so heavy handed, I find them eye rolling even if I agree with them.

Modern messaging is also so personal/lifestyle focused that it is more likely to offend people.

I don't believe it. I need to see much more before I do. Until JayArrah and his gang of lisped miscreants are on here complaining about how red blooded new movies are, I still see Hollywood as the groomer machine is has been

This is great news. Movies should be for everyone

This also should be on the poli board. As it isn't discussing any movie or TV show and instead is talking about the political landscape of hollywood

As I pointed out in the original thread, it wasn't political posts in themselves that were the issue.

It was when people hijacked actual discourse and turned threads into non-stop political circle jerks.

Just look at the Acolyte thread. The thing was, what, over 100 pages?
Yet almost no one in the thread seemed to actually want to watch the show.

The most recent thread regarding the Drinker's latest video was much more cordial than you usually see, but I kind of keep expecting it to suddenly get bombarded.

Disney still has a ton of garbage lodged in its pipeline that's still going to be dumped before things even start to get better.

Snow White
The Rey Palpatine movie(s)?
Captain African-American Falcon
Fantastic Four
Avengers: Secret Wars
Lady IronHeart
Agatha all along...

This isn't going to look pretty, y'all.

Red states? How about people who want good stories and good characters. I've said a hundred times, even if their movies and shows were 100% white males, they would still suck.

Take One Piece, for example. It has race swaps, gender swaps, boss ladies and even a trans kid in it, but it was one of the biggest fan favorites of the year.

Because it's good. The problem is that the studios are hiring based on political views alone, and it's all they know how to do. They have no real talent.

That's because young people don't care about any of those things haha

With prestige TV, video games, and social media content, the writing talent is just stretched REAL thin these days.

I've been watching some online-only comedy and horror content, and it's night and day between that and a lot of the stuff being mass produced.
