Can an engineer or lithium battery expert make me feel better?

After watching that video of the Chinese guy trapped in the elevator and the story last year on here where a bad lithium battery took out 70 golf carts at a country club....
What fail-safes are built into this technology to prevent my stash of ego batteries from burning down my house?
Is it a heat issue? What's the science behind a runaway battery? In this weather when I bring in a dead battery to charge it's on fire and I generally just leave it and come back later to charge.
How safe are these batteries especially ones sold on Amazon from China?
What is trigger(s) that causes them to spark?

What kind of battery is used in electric cars?

Most are lithium ion.
I definitely wouldn't keep the cheap arse Chinese shite in my house

That's kind of my point.
I have Lifepo4 batteries in my golf cart, a shelf full of lion tool batteries and an electric car in my garage.

Seems like salt water can trigger them to burst into flames. So...if you live near the coast.

I'm a lot more careful buying batteries now after watching the video below.

fter watching that video of the Chinese guy trapped in the elevator
I've been replaying it in my head and thinking about what I would (or even could) do in that situation, and I'm coming up blank. The only thing I could think of is maybe lunging at the elevator buttons and just wiping my hand down all of them in hopes that the doors would open in a few seconds. Then trying to escape once they do. But that's also assuming you could guess where the buttons were and even manage to hit them, since the elevator was filled immediately with smoke and fire. And on top of that you're literally burning and turning into a crispy black char in the process.
That one is staying with me for a while. And I think pretty much 100% of people in that scenario are dead.

lithium batteries typically have a battery management module built in them

There isn’t really. A co-worker had their house burn down earlier this year because the lithium batteries to his drills in his garage spontaneously exploded

The same kind (categorically) of batteries are used in:
Watches
Laptops/Tablets
Car Key Fob Remotes
Pacemakers
Cell Phones
Portable Power Banks
Mobility Scooters (Rascals)
Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPS)
Defibrillators
Lithium-Ion batteries have been around since the 1970s.

LI FE PO4 are very safe, safe for marine environments. The key is don’t buy cheap Chinese crap.

Shitty, negligent manufacturing practices in foreign countries is your answer, buddy.

I’m with you.
That video freaked me out, especially since I have a LITime 24v in my boat right now .
I’d be in a world of shite if that thing caught fire while I’m in the gulf .
I’m really considering selling it after watching that. That’s not a chance I want to take

Just went out to my garage and unplugged my 4 chargers that all have batteries on them.

Depends on how much you’re willing to pay.

If the manufacturer makes Lithium-Ion batteries...but their CEO can't pronounce the "L" in Lithium...don't use it.

i did the same thing about 100 times. it escalated so quickly there's no hope. the timing
it was a coffin. he had maybe 1-2 seconds before the explosion; there's nothing anyone could do.
i keep replaying in my head what it would have been like had the elevator been full of people.

I think most small electronics these days use lithium polymer, which are probably worse.

i bought some cheap (like $5) 3D printed battery mounts on ebay and screwed them into a board on my wall to move my ego batteries to once they're charged. i understand there are electronic fail-safes built in...
...but to the other points on here; a lithium battery in my casio watch is not the same as a 7.5ah battery that powers my mower for 2 hours.
these things are getting more and more powerful but the form factor is still about the size of that...thing...the dude was holding when the elevator melted down.
