What are some of the prevailing theories? To what extent is it genetics and to what extent is it lack of interest and culture? Government's willingness to invest?

One way or the other, India is per capita the shittiest country in the world at the Olympics and second place isn't even close..

It’s a shitty country (pun intended) in general.

For many Olympic sports, you don’t have to be super athletic, you have to be extremely skilled. I don’t know, fencing and curling (winter) come to mind.

If Mexico can field a synchronized diving team, I don’t see what is stopping India.

Because cricket isn’t in the Olympics until 2028.

Probably lack of investment and culture as much as anything. Theoretically they should have enough people in the population to be good at something .

Most nations you see at the opening ceremony don't even have a chance in hell of winning a medal.

Many of those delegations send like 8 athletes and most of them are basically just gift-wrapped manufactured entries/quals in their regions so the Olympics can be "globally inclusive" and such.

If you actually just took the 50 or 100 best athletes from around the world in each discipline the US and many other top sporting nations would take up like 95% of the slots.

Just look at the finals in each big event. There's never a "Tonga" or "Laos" or "Burkina Faso" in those events. Many of them can't even get out of the first heat.

We're just so spoiled it's kind of crazy. USA is easily the top sporting nation on earth when you factor in how much of the world's population we train and house here via our NCAA/University system.

I mean the Oregon and Arkansas and Florida alone probably have better T&F facilities and amenities and training than almost every other country. And those are just a few of hundreds of locations in the US.

One of my club coaches won a gold medal representing a country of under 400k people. While India has done just awfully at the Olympics, one of those ~6 dozen 0 medal countries has 170 million citizens. That's who the worst is, and it's Bangladesh

I don’t want to carry over from another thread, but yes people act like other countries pay their Olympic athletes well and have amazing training facilities. But they don’t, that’s why as said here that the best Olympic training grounds are arguably the US at #1 and then US universities as #2. It really is quite amazing how many olympians go to universities in the US.

Its the same reason US soccer isn't "catching up" with Europe. It's about having the best coaching/most skilled players.

As long as the coaching in other places is better, you aren't gonna close the gap because of having more athletes

Fun fact:

India has less medals than Nazi Germany.

Nazi Germany competed in 1 Olympics.

Bangladesh has no Olympic athletes as there is no physical space to compete in any sport with their population density so high

I think the Indians only really excel at wrestling in the lower weight classifications.

How are the US women the best program in the world then?

I've never understood how the female program can be so good internationally and the men are so mediocre.

The rest of the world doesn't give a shite about women

Girls in the US are given money and opportunities that the rest of the world does not
