Just discovered this guy, very unique and cool sound. A couple posts made here and there about him on TD. Very alt-country/rock.

He gets playing time on both outlaw country and alt nation on Sirius.

Love discovering new music and artists, keeps my faith in music alive.

I like his work in Wednesday more than his solo stuff, but I agree that he’s really good.

He's great, collabs with Waxahatchee have been great. The entire label he is on is quality.

Listened to his first album a couple of weeks ago. He kind of reminds me of Jason Molina a little bit.

100% this. I just recently discovered both his solo music, and Wednesday’s. I much prefer the sound of Wednesday to his solo stuff, but the Wednesday chick singer annoys the hell out of me.

His newest boat songs solo album really gets on my nerves, both musically and lyrically. He’s definitely talented, but that drive by trucker meets pavement sound annoys the shite out of me.

However, I’ve listened to his album Him, from 2017, and I really enjoy that one. The other poster is correct, he takes a lot of inspiration from Jason Molina…but i’d rather that influence a sound than Stephen malkmus.

It took me a bit to get used to her. Now that I have, I think her vocals fit with the music very well.

it’s not so much her singing, just her visually.

though she does do this strange little whine where the raises and lowers octaves or something in the same breath. It’s hard to explain.

His album Boat Songs is easily in my top 10 for the 2020s. Looking forward to his new one.

I’ve seen someone call him “Jason Molina with an Athletic subscription” and I thought that was fitting.

Same. I've listened to him A LOT in the past few weeks. Basically have had Boat Songs on repeat. Gnar Cat 21 introduced me to him.

Just pre-ordered his new vinyl on Amazon. It’s $19.99 if you’re interested.

I like MJ. I like his solo work better than Wednesday. MJ’s songs are mostly silly wordplay. I’d say more Kurt Vile or as someone else mentioned Pavement. Jason was a poet. And very dark.

I like the first two songs Ive heard from his upcoming album more than anything I heard off of Boat Songs (maybe I need to give that another listen).. and I love what he added to the latest Waxahatchee record..

I kinda get the Pavement/Malkmus references, but its not that heavy for me... Same with the Molina references..

I can hear other things in his sound, but in the end I do think he's his own thing which is a good thing... There is only one Malkmus and the world doesn't need another Molina..

Every time I hear that song, I think it's Pinegrove for a few seconds. I really like it

Bump

I went to school in NC and a month or two ago heard this song in a wine bar owned by guys my age (50s) who like music. This dude hits home. Playing alt country rock that I dug in college 35 years later.

Yep. I thought the same thing the first time I heard him. More his vocal style than his guitar

I really like his stuff. But the first song of his I heard on XMU I thought to myself shite this is a Neal Young song I've never heard, the voice the guitar riff, everything. She Is Leaving You I think.
