Monticello in Baton Rouge

My kid got invited to a kids birthday party in Monticello. I know this is further east than the heart of NBR, but pretty sure this should be a hard pass, right? My wife thinks she could stop by for just an hour or so, says that our kid is really good friends at school with the birthday kid. I think she has that afraid of being labeled a racist vibe going.
What say the OT?

She should go
Even if she dies, it's still better than being racist

I don't think a drive-by would hurt anything.
What street are they on?

Wouldn't buy a house there personally...but would not be scared of going to a kid's birthday party

Use to be one of the nicer neighborhoods. Now not so much.

Anything north of Coursey was a no go zone for me for years.

You’ll be fine. Monticello is not a warzone.

Monticello is pretty much the outer run of the BR portion of Greenwell Springs rd. Just east. Monticello got beat up in 2016 and I haven't been back since but I imagine plenty decent folks still live there. After you get out of the subdivision on Greenwell Springs/Hwy37 it's pretty much a straight shot to Central. Other words you're not really in the hood. Further west you go on 37 it's Merrydale which is getting a bit sketch until you cross further in and then you're getting into Brookstown.. Istrouma which isn't where you really want to be.

What school does your kid go to that has Monticello kids attending?
I'm guessing this is St. Thomas More Catholic.
Monticello is a safe neighborhood. Hell, even Park Forest is still a safe neighborhood. It's not the people living there as much as the people visiting.

No. It sounds like you're being a bitch.

Just go.
The kid that invited your kid will be happy and excited. Put all the BS thoughts aside and realize that it’s a kids birthday party.

I remember as a child that Monticello was always known as the neighborhood for great Christmas decorations.

It is not a bad subdivision. Like others have already said, it is a kids birthday. Go and have fun and quit worrying. Who knows, you might meet some nice people.
Oh, and tell the kid happy birthday.

I would definitely risk my families lives and volunteer them to be in harms way at the risk of someone that doesn’t matter to me thinking I may or may not be a racist.

I used to think it was a magical rich people's neighborhood because of the lights. haha

Yeah, I dated a few girls in that neighborhood, and the Christmas lights were always a huge thing. Cars would line up on N. Sherwood for blocks to get into the neighborhood to see the Christmas lights. It was a real thing.

Even some of the worst areas in the USA generally are fine during the day. It’s at night you don’t want to be walking around.
The people during the day out and about are generally going to be very nice and friendly. The gang bangers and druggies that are up all night sleep most of the day.

We lived on Monticello BLVD for almost 20 years. That neighborhood, especially during Xmas, was an awesome place for a kid to grow up in the 80’s. I have so many wonderful memories growing up there.
I pass through there from time to time. I don’t think that neighborhood is an unsafe place, especially for a kids bday party. Let the kid go to the party!

Not going to a kids birthday party because you’re scared of the area of town is pretty shitty.
Aside from the example you’re setting for your child imagine being the parent of a kid when nobody came to their party because they didn’t live in a nice area and couldn’t afford to rent a place out.
I’m a dickhead about plenty of stuff but when it comes to kids, find a way to make it happen.
