......for his birthday. He's 23 so not looking for youth model. Most shots inside 250yds where we hunt. What's your favorite brand/caliber and why?

I still shoot the same 30-06 I have had for 38 years and it's great. Im not sure whats good now. Ive been reading about Remington quality going down. Help me out......

Maybe it's just me, but give him that one for sentimental reasons and buy a new one for yourself.

Tikka was the unofficial OB rifle for a while.

I personally like a Browning.

Savage Axis w scope combo - Inexpensive and every one I sighted when I used to work at the gun range was a tack driver.
Ruger American is a close second.

He will definitely get it one day. It was my dad's and I'm not quite ready to give it up

The newer Remingtons are much better. It’s under new ownership and I’m happy with my new wingmaster.

There’s plenty of brands out there that have great rifles. It really depends on what you think he would like. There’s plenty to choose from out there. It kind of depends on what you want to spend too.

Getting something in a versatile, popular caliber would be my recommendation though. .308, 30-06, or .270.

For something pretty, I’d look into Winchester or Browning, although there are others.

Ruger and Savage have great budget rifles.

Currently have a deal in 308 for $350 after rebate. Sounds like a decent deal in a good caliber.

My dad bought me a .308 20 years ago. I still shoot it today. Best gift I've ever been given.

30-06 is a good choice, the ammo is usually available at lil hardware stores and such. Same with .308.

Gun and scope or just the gun?

Do your son a favor and don’t cheap out on a scope.

The rifle market has changed a ton in the last 10 years. Lots of accurate rifles are not life time rifles.

Like others have said, .308 is ubiquitous, easy to find and can be used on other big game besides deer.

Tikka is an amazing production rifle for the price.

Tell him you’re thinking about getting a backup rifle. Ask him what caliber you should get. That way you’ll get him what he wants.

I love my tika T3 for deer hubting in La and TX and Missouri. In 7mm-08. Stainless barrel and synthetic stock is for LA mud and moisture and its light and shoots well. With that said that woukd be over my budget flr my kid whi at 8 got a Weatherby Vanguard and has shite plenty of deer with it. He is now 25. Budget friendly and it came with a youth and adult stock. Also in 7mm-08. Both guns are reliable and have great MOA guarantee.

7mm-08 has been an incredible cartridge for whitetail and kill an elk. We have shot 200+ lb hogs with it. Animals neved gi much further than 30-60 yards when not dropped in sight.

Now with 7mm-08 sort of harder to find and more expensive id consider 308 for what we do all 40-200 yrds in wooded area.
