Looking at buying a youth 20 ga semi auto for my son to move up from his .410. The price and availability of shells for 410 is nuts and I'm confident he can handle a 20 ga at this point (he's 10). It'll mainly be for squirrel hunting and maybe a dove hunt or two a year. Looking for something in the $600 range because I'm sure he'll be moving up to a 12 gauge in the next few years and this one will probably sit in the safe. Any recommendations on any of the budget guns (TriStar, Escort, etc) or should I shy away from those?

Buy him an awesome 20ga and he can use it forever. I think 20ga is just as good for dove and squirrel as a 12. Better maybe, because it's lighter.

I have a beretta 20gaxplor with kickoff that is the smoothest shooting gun I have. Any kid who can shoot a 410 would be able to handle it. I use it and 28ga for clays and everything else but waterfowl.

My son has a youth Stoeger in 20 gauge. He’s shot a dozen cases or so with it in the past couple of years with no issues.
I have a Benelli Super 90 in 12guage that I’ve had for almost 25 years. The design of the Stoeger is the same.

I bought my son a Benelli Montefeltro that came with both a youth and adult stock. Great quality gun, he’s grown now and uses it for all sorts of things. As someone said, a gun for life.

.28 gauge shells seem to be at every store I go to when everything else sells out.

Bought mine a Franchi Affinity compact when he was around 8.
The gun has been spectacular. Two years ago I replaced the compact stock with a regular stock. Was the 1st time I was able to find it.
He’s 18 and headed to college next month. He has some great guns. SBE2 and a Browning Citori that he used for trap and he loves to dove hunt with the Franchi.

And if you didn’t know the Franchi is a Beretta company and the internals are the same as the Benelli Super Black Eagle.

Bought the Tristar for my daughter years ago. Love that thing. It’s held up remarkably well for being used predominantly in salt and brackish marsh. She petite and still uses it a good bit.

I would look at Benelli Montefeltro or a M2 or SBE3. I know there’s a lot of ppl that say 12gauge is the king. But honestly now a days with chocked and different shells a 20gauge is just as good. I have matching 20 and 12 gauges in Benelli SBE3. Getting to the point for normal wing hunting I find myself grabbing the 20gauge more and more.

If someone can shoot well the 20 ga is superior imo. Lighter and more fun to shoot. Especially if walking fields or woods.

I too bought one for my kids and it's been used by 3 of them over the past 5 or 6 years. It's a fine gun.

I bought this for my son. He shoots shotgun sports in 4H. He shoots it well, and no reliability issues other than the occasional FTE using light target loads.
