Looking for advice on which city to stop in for a connection for 3 nights. Never been to Europe. Couple in 30s, no kids. Returning from a trip to Malta. These are my options:
Barcelona
Amsterdam
Paris
Vienna
Copenhagen
Munich
Rome
Zurich

If it’s any time soon, I would avoid Paris because of the Olympics. It will be chaotic as hell there.
If it’s after mid-August, Paris is fair game.
I would go with one of Rome, Barcelona, or Paris if it’s later in the year.
If it’s in the late fall or winter, Rome and Barcelona will have better weather than Paris.

Personally, I would delete Copenhagen and Zurich from the list. All of the others would be able to occupy you very well for three days.

I would disagree. Copenhagen would be high on the list. Amsterdam and Barcelona would be the others in my top 3. It really comes down to what you want to experience.

I know nothing about this place. Could yall each give me some reasoning for the opposite opinions?

Good list.
Can’t go wrong with any of those.
If I had to pick one, it would be Paris.

I've been to all of these cities and they each have their own unique charms.
Connection? As in you want to fly from Malta to that City and continue on later from there to the US?
First thing I'd think of is how much time is 3 days actually. Flying from Malta, getting there, checking in etc., burns a day right there. But may you have factored that in. Bottom line you don't have much time and you don't want to burn it traveling, connecting, etc. Find the easiest destination with the best connections back to your airport in the US for starters.
You didn't say if you'd been to any of these cities or if you and the MS/SO have every had any of them on a bucket list?
October is a great time to visit any of these cities. It'll be cooler, not as crowded.
Actually going back to Munich and Salzburg this November. I'm not a beer drinker, but it's obviously known for its famous Oktoberfest, Munich is vibrant in October! But I'm going to rule that one out.
For me, it's either Amsterdam or Rome because of the historic, iconic landmarks, food and great airports.
If I had to chose just one, absent anything other information, my vote would be:
#1. Amsterdam. Was just there in November of last year. Canal tours are a MUST DO! Great food scene. You can take a train to Zaandijk, Netherlands and see the windmills. Maybe a 25-minute train ride. Tour the amazing Rijksmuseum. I'm not a museum person, but you could spend a day there easy. Of course there's the more touristy red-light district, but it's fun to walk around and look.
Selected Photos.

Thanks for the post. Nice photos!
Yea so this is really just a trip to Malta, but getting there from my home airport requires a stop in one of the cities in the OP. All of those cities will take me home nonstop. Figured I might as well spend a couple nights in the connection city before returning home while I'm over there. I know I won't have time to do everything but just trying to make the most of my time while I'm on that side of the world

I think seeing a Northern European city after the stay in Malta would be a really good contrast.
Having been to AMS and CPH in shoulder season/offseason, I found they are pretty comparable for food, architecture, history. You could distinguish the two based on one important factor -- If you do not like crowds of tourists, go with CPH. If you are OK with tourist crowds and the energy they bring, then AMS is the winner.

I would go to Barcelona.

From your list I've only been to (Vienna Munich Rome Zurich) and I would chose Rome hands down for three days.
Lisbon would be a good choice, cheaper than any of the cities you listed.

Paris is my answer
Since you are talking about October and are coming from Malta, I think it would also be mine.
Paris can be challenging in the summer crowds, but it should be a different story in October, and it will definitely provide a nice contrast with Malta.

This is the answer. Go to Lisbon over any of those other cities with Rome as the 2nd choice. Barcelona 3rd.
Stay away from Paris, those people will be even worse after dealing with the olympics

All solid options, except maybe Munich.
I’m biased for living here and Amsterdam is mentioned a lot already so won’t delve too much into that.
Barcelona is probably my favorite city.
But Lisbon not on your list and mentioned a couple times as well is also up there.
It has so much to offer, gorgeous and unique architecture, views, scenery, friendly locals, lively nightlife, excellent dining (Portuguese food is severely underrated, they’re masters of seafood), fairytale castles, manors and forests in nearby Sintra and excellent beaches in its surroundings - and it should be more budget friendly than all of the contenders you mentioned.
