LSU at Notre Dame 1970

I never saw this game. Looks like someone took a ND radio broadcast and fixed video to it.ND with Joe Theisman at QB beat LSU 3-0. LSU with Casanova and Andy Hamilton, heroes from my childhood.

Man, one thing is certain is that Cholly Mac did not know how to use Bert Jones to his full potential.

The defense was impressive. LSU had bad field position much of the game. Stopped ND (fumble recovery) with a first down inside LSU’s 5. Made Theisman look pretty average.

I was there. The game was an absolute slugfest and a standoff. Unfortunately, the ref threw a flag for interference late in the game to allow ND to kick the winning field goal. It was a bogus call. Baton Rouge TV station had that play on a loop,and the LSU defensive back was no where close to the receiver. Home cooking. Sweet revenge the next year when ND came to Tiger Stadium and we put a 28-7 beat down on them.
I’ll save the story of our trip to ND in 1970 for another time. It was incredible.

Could have had another Heisman winner if he had. Never realized this before, but Bert went 2nd in the NFL draft, and his daddy, Dub Jones, went 2nd in the 1946 NFL draft. Cool fact

…or pass on 1st down a whole lot. Not to take anything from LSU’s D back then, but if you had equal or superior players back then it was easy to play D. I guess throwing the ball all over the place was taboo.

There were 2 or 3 pass interference calls late in that game which led to the 3-0 final. Another tidbit from that epic battle was the 2nd string defense which shut down the Irish game in the 3rd quarter limiting them to minus yards. Classic game. I remember the headlines in the sports section read “if Notre Dame is 1 then LSU is 1A”.

Charley Mac would have been an elite coach, if only he had ever had an offensive coordinator worth a d*m.
After rewatching the Ole Miss game, and the Orange Bowl game from that year, it's really appalling how predictable and stodgy the Tiger offense was under McClendon. I know LSU scored 61 v the Rebels, but 5 TDs were on special teams & defensive plays.

I was in my last year at LSU. Watched the game on a big screen in the old Gym Armory. Big crowd, and it sounded like you were at the game. I agree with the bad calls late in the game. Lotsa booing, like they would be able to hear us.
Ronnie Estay was a hoss.
Extra fun for the payback game. Bert and Andy Hamilton put on a show. Great goal line stand as well. Good Times.

1969-1973 was my favorite period of LSU football. That was when I was a student there and the games were electric. And we always won at home, save for the two losses vs Bama in 71 & 73 and that opening season upset by Colorado in 1971.

I still have the front page of the Chicago Tribune sports page and that’s exactly what it said. It hasn’t been mentioned but before the game, ND was #1 and LSU was #7. Incredible football game.

I was at the game as well. A day or so before the game the Chicago newspaper said of the game that it was an unstoppable force versus an unmovable object. It was a slugfest through 3+ quarters until the refs called pass interference on LSU twice which gave ND an opportunity to kick a field goal and win 3-0.

Just to set the record straight, the final score was 28-8. I was there and was really upset when they got the 2 point conversion.

Thank you very much for posting this game. This is the first time I’ve been able to watch this huge battle that made Tiger fans very proud even during a loss. I thought a Chicago writing printed that it was the greatest defensive battle in ND history.

As an LSU sophomore, I watched this game in the gym armory on a closed-circuit television broadcast on a giant screen. We could hear nothing from the broadcast. Great atmosphere in the GA.
