working on design for a kitchen renovation…my cooking appliances are all 1980s vintage

so this will be a one time shot. I want

-48” range with dual ovens
-dual fuel
-all burners
-new (big) exhaust hood
-new fridge

blue star looks like a good option and the prices seem OK. Anyone have real world experience? Pros/Cons?

I would prefer no circuit board/electronics but I’m guessing I’ll be SOL on that unless I go full restaurant style which is more than I want to spend and probably overkill

Also currently I have a cooktop and wall ovens. Anyone regret ditching the wall ovens? I need the space

No personal experience but a coworker redid her kitchen with all Blue Star and raves about it.

We just went through that same scenario and we are going Wolf/Sub Zero.

We've been living in our 5th wheel for 4 months during a total remodel. We should be moving back in next week.

I miss our double wall ovens since we moved to a house without. Bending over to open the oven and take stuff out or put in sucks and is something to consider if you are older or cook a lot.

Shouldn’t make a difference in space. You just have extra pull out drawers for pots under the stovetop if you have wall ovens vs the oven underneath and cabinets on wall.

I’ve thought about that…
my particular situation is that my small kitchen is a U shaped corral formed by the base and wall cabinets and two people can’t really coexist in the space at the same time…the extra 2.5’ I’d get by eliminating one wall of cabinets would really help. Plus that’s less cabinet I have to replace with new

pros and cons with everything

I have a blue star 36” all gas and it is a unit. No electronics like you said other than igniter, light, and convection fan. Mine has the full cast iron top open burners and I love that you can slide pots around instead of picking up and putting on another burner. It’s a no frills cooking machine that looks like it belongs in a restaurant.

I did have the replace the oven igniter which was a pretty simple $30 fix.

I was poised to buy another for my garage kitchen but came across a ridiculous deal on another all stainless range someone on fb was selling.

My daughter & SIL have the Blue Star 36 inch gas range, few years old now & they love it. I’m looking into the same to replace my commercial Vulcan, 31 years old works fine, but doesn’t have a broiler - always wanted a broiler function.

rubs hands together

-48” range with dual ovens

damn thats a big un. i like the all-in-one. no ragrets ripping out our 1970s era double wall oven. we went with a 36" and the oven is HUGE. i get wanting dual ovens and if you have the space for it, why not go for a 48 monster? you'll find a reason to need both ovens.

quote:

-dual fuel
-all burners

i dont know what they offer in 48" but dont sleep on induction; if you are set on gas already, i'm sure it will be fine but i freaking love our induction. so much less mess; my wife cooks up a storm and damn i had to take the grates off every other day & clean around them and take the burners off at least once a month & get after them.

quote:

-new (big) exhaust hood

dont go crazy on this; any generic high-cfm will be fine.

quote:

-new fridge

frick subzero. you don't need the hassle. you couldn't pay me to give up our single-door frigidaire set. i think Wiz has the same unit, its so freaking nice and roomy and i went ahead & added a 5 year warranty (it was only a couple hundred bucks) but its solid as a rock and frigidaire cranks out millions of fridges based on the same rock solid mechanics so your chances of anything going wrong are low.

oh and its maybe 1/3 - 1/4 the price of a subzero.

thx everyone, sounds like blue star is a good choice.
i feel like we would use the double ovens so 48" is where we landed.
if we go all gas the range will be less than 10K which is in budget

CAD thanks for the suggestions on fridge that is very nice. whats the model #/etc on that please?

4 parts:

- Fridge ($2,500ish)
- Freezer ($2,500ish)
- 'anti freeze' pad that goes between them ($25)
- trim kit ($500ish)

you'll need a double-outlet behind the fridge to plug in all 3 - fridge, freezer & anti-freeze pad so plan accordingly. i didn't spend this much on a fridge to stick an extension cord behind it.

AJ Madison sells the kit (you can get flat or louvered trim for the same price) under this SKU but there's no reason you can't buy the 4 items separately. Any decent local appliance store should have sell them or have one on display hopefully. it looks BADASS in person and you'll swear its a $12,000 fridge when you see it.

LINK

$6,700 but you can sometimes source it for around $5k all in. the fridge and freezer go on sale frequently...i picked up the fridge unit for a ridiculous $950 so keep an eye out!

I put mine together (i dont trust anyone) when the kitchen was complete and it was literally a 45 minute job and that was only because i moved like a turtle making sure everything was perfect. given your outdoor tub project, this would be nothing.

*LOVE THE INSANE FREEZER SPACE*. its my favorite part of the whole thing.

The best no circuit board ovens are Capital. Very simple and a basic screwdriver is the only tool you need to fix them.

i'm at home depot looking at stupid-arse fridges with touchscreens and 5 different icemakers & water spigots on the front and my wife was like "I'M NOT PUTTING THOSE UGLY THINGS IN MY HOUSE".

she, again, was correct and as soon as i saw this in person and opened it..i was in love. your kitchen fridge shouldn't be an eyesore and Frigidaire even states in their marketing they deliberately left off all external branding so this would fit in with any appliance update.

i feel like i'm opening the crypt in this summer weather when i open the freezer and icy clouds billow out into the room. i'm like 'thats how i want my freezer to react when i open it"

two comments...

i was dead set on this for the same reason. We host a lot of holidays and figured we'd want that extra space Ended up looking at the 48" model and the small oven is tiny and it really didn't make sense to get it for the reason above. We ended up going with a 36" BS instead. I've never ran into an issue where we needed two ovens. Also note that the 36" will have a larger oven than the 48"'s large oven. I can fit a full sheet pan, the 48" looks like it only fit a 2/3 sheet pan. Something to consider.

On the side by side full size fridge and freezer, they are pretty awesome! My neighbor has one. Unfortunately for them, they ordered during covid and had the opening with a regular fridge in it for a while until their set came in. That would be something to consider since the double set is a custom size and what do you do when they go out if that's not made any more. As opposed to a fridge/freezer in more of the standard sizing.

ALSO, for the love of all that is holy, either get counter depth or recess your full depth fridge so it doesn't stick into your kitchen. The worst is these houses with awesome kitchens and half of the damn fridge sticking out of the cabinet. PLAN YOUR PROJECTS BETTER, PEOPLE!

i agree with this. the 36" oven we have is HUGE and heats really really well.

we looked at the larger sized unit and we didn't have the space for it but i was also surprised with how small the dual ovens were by comparison after checking out the 36.

just go look in person at both sizes and open the ovens and honestly, that will tell the story better than anything.

but if you do alot of cooking, that extra surface area will come in handy on the 48 but it does come at the price of smaller ovens.

good advice on the range, thanks. we are going to try and find a showroom where we can eyeball these things and then decide. 36" is much cheaper. full sheet pan is a must

the way this is laying out the fridge/freezer will free-stand (not built in) and will actually be in a "separate" room...not ideal but the reason we are doing this is to make more space in the cooking area...

see below. all comments/ridicule encouraged

i feel you.

we had a 'laundry room' kitchen. air fryer, tiny microwave, old fridge, coffeemaker, power strip which would overload if we tried to use the microwave and the coffeemaker at the same time.

about 4 months of "honey, can you grab the bread behind the dog treats" and preparing our dinner plates on top of the washing machine

eta love the big picture window
