Trying to do a big boil this weekend for a lot of people. How many pounds of shrimp would the pot hold to go with potatoes, corn, and sausage?

I’m sure I’ll end up having to do a 2nd batch but I’m looking to get 30#’s of shrimp.

for shrimp, go somewhere between 1 - 1.5 pounds per person

Sorry I meant how much in relation to the size of the pot.

There’s going to be a bunch of other food there so it isn’t just a boil event.

You need approximately (2x^3)y pounds of shrimp where x is the number of people and y is the ratio of men vs women as a decimal

With plenty of corn, potatoes, and sausage, you can easily stretch a half pound (heads off) per person. You also said there's other food there. I like leftovers so I do a pound per person. I rarely cook for more than 8.

If you are cooking for 25, and you do a pound per person, be prepared to store as many as ten pounds of leftover cooked shrimp without it going bad sitting out on a table for hours.

It isn’t pounds per person I’m concerned with. It’s how much do you think a 30 quart would reasonably hold?

I did 25 lbs of head-on 13-15 count in a 60 qt pot and it was pretty full. A little too full to be honest. So I’d shoot for less than half that in a 30 qt pot.

Thanks. I’m not totally sold on if I’m wanting to do a boil or just throw a shite ton of frozen burger paddies on the grill. I don’t really love the idea of doing 3 or 4 batches of boil.

Depends on your ratio of other stuff in there. If you do all the other stuff first, dump it out, then do a separate cook for just the shrimp (cooks in minutes) you can probably do 10 pounds and still have enough volume for the water.

But you are thinking about it wrong. Get as many as you want to feed people, and cook in batches if you can't get it all in one cook.

That’s what I’ve been saying since the OP

I’m just trying to figure out how many batches it’s going to take. I said in the OP that I was looking to get 30#.

you need to boil the corn, potatoes, onions, garlic, sausage separately from the shrimp. Once they are seasoned and done, put in an ice chest and close lid to keep hot/warm.

Go watch several videos on how Stalekracker boils his shrimp. Boil shrimp in unseasoned water with cut up lemons for 60 seconds. Remove shrimp set aside. Then season the water with your normal liquid and dry powder seasonings. Allow the water to cool. Then add the shrimp to seasoned water that is comfortable enough to put your hand in . Let the shrimp soak and absorb the seasoning.

If you try to boil EVERYTHING together in a 30 qt pot, you're gonna FukItUp.

Yep. I’ve boiled some in a 30q (turkey fryer) when I have been out of state and this is the only way. All that shite holds well so cook it first.

Then you can do about 8-9lbs head-on in the 30q. It will fit a little more, but they get too packed in there. If you need more than that then you are likely going to need to break it up into batches.

Boiling all the other stuff first is a pretty solid idea especially since the shrimp doesn’t take long at all. I’ve seen his videos and that’s how I usually do small stovetop boils. But the only way I could do that method as well as the above is to not season all the other stuff in its boil. Not exactly loving that idea lol
