Why in tarnation would you want to go to Columbus? You miss Sand Hill or something?

Lived there for 3 years, not sure what you are looking for, but here are a couple of things to do there.
They have the National Infantry Museum, which is well done. Also have the National Civil War Naval Museum which is interesting if you like these type of activities.
The Riverwalk is short and underwhelming, it's fine if you live there, but I don't see it as a destination.
Check out Callaway Gardens just north of Columbus. Has a really good zip-line and tree-top course, hiking, golf, a small beach / lake for swimming.

I did a temporary job in Columbus. The best thing about Columbus was being 30 minutes from Auburn. Like previously stated, the Infantry Museum is probably the only thing worth visiting. Whatever you think of FDR the Little White House north of Columbus is interesting.
If you do stop there, make sure you stay on the North side of town.

AWESOME place. It's an Army town so it does come with that, lol. I was stationed there at Fort Benning three different times for about six year total, even though it's been awhile. I visit every couple of years though. It's called Fort Moore now.
As others mentioned, The National Infantry Museum, right at the entry to the base is awesome, and you don't need any kind of military ID to go to the museum. If you're there from Monday to Thursday and the weather is nice, ask about Fryar Drop Zone on the Alabama side of the Chattahoochee River. You may get to see paratroopers parachuting out of airplanes.
Downtown area towards the Riverwalk was getting nice last time I was there.
Stay away from Victory Drive unless you're into hookers and blow. It's strip joint, then pawn shop, then liquor store, then used car dealership, then repeat...
Surrounding area is nice as others have stated (Callaway / Auburn / Stone Mountain).

Is Golden Donut still around? That place had the best coffee and donuts.

Went to Columbus for half a day and enjoyed it. We checked out the river area downtown and went to the naval civil war museum. I would think 1 day is more than enough time.

I want to take my 10 year old white water rafting and it seemed like there was an okay place there for
his first trip. We all like ziplining too.

Ok, they have a good rafting setup and zip lines over the Chattahoochee. The rafting will last a couple of hours and has up to class 5 rapids depending on the river flow and what you want to tackle. They have options for beginners that don't include the advanced rapids, which sounds like what you are looking for.
You can easily spend the better part of a day doing this and walking the revitalized uptown strip along Broadway street. This has a few small boutiques and a number of restaurants. Our favorite casual place to eat in that area was the Black Cow, it was still there as of a year or so ago. Mabella's Italian Steakhouse is a little more upscale and was great too. If you like craft beer Maltitude has a huge selection on tap and will fill growlers or fence posts. The owners also have a restaurant Nonic where you can sit and drink, but be warned the menu is a little eclectic.
Finally, as others have said you want to stay at exit 10 or north. I did stay at the Marriot right by the rafting and uptown area a little over a year ago and it was clean and I always felt safe, but they have a train that runs literally in the street next to it and they blow the whistle the entire way through town. It will wake you 2-3 times throughout the night.
Hope you have a good time.

Thanks everyone. My kid loves history especially presidential stuff so the FDR stuff will be real appealing too.

Love Nonic. Used to frequent there when I used to go for work. Black Cow is good too. The Cannon Brewhouse is a cool place as well, been there for a long time.
I enjoyed the museum too. My uncle and I biked around Fort Benning one time, and that was interesting seeing the training grounds and what not.
I also used to enjoy going to do the riverwalk and just watching folks kayak the rapids. Its impressive.
Flat Rock Park is a neat park, good disc golf course there.

Once at work I told my foreman that an order was going to Columbus which is a one-day delivery from Sandusky but he had it marked down for two. Then he told me that's because it was going to Columbus, Georgia not Columbus, Ohio and he sarcastically called me Wonder Boy.

Depending on how old your kid is the Columbus museum has a lot of kid friendly stuff and they just went through a huge renovation. They have a lot of local artists and historical stuff about the Chattahoochee River region

Also forgot about the Coca-Cola Space Science Center. My wife took her 5th grade classes there for field trips and they always had a good time .

Went to my first strip joint in Columbus. A super trashy place. Traffic Light Inn or something like that.
Strip joints down there in the early 90's were no like the ones in Atlanta.

I've traveled all over the US for work and I can honestly say, I've had the bet Thai food ever in Columbus.

Visit the Black Cow for the pineapple casserole.
National Infantry Museum is amazing.
Spent 7 hours there and did not see everything. Will return soon.
