Who will be New Orleans mayor after LaToya Cantrell? Candidates are building campaigns

Helena Moreno, the council president and former legislator who has emerged as one of the state’s most progressive elected officials, has been interviewing and hiring campaign staff for a mayoral run in recent weeks, according to several people with knowledge of those conversations who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Oliver Thomas, a fixture of city politics for decades whose support runs deep even beyond his New Orleans East council district, signaled in an interview this week that he will likely run, too.
“If polling looks good, as I’m hearing it looks, I will strongly consider that,” Thomas said. “Until that time comes, I’m going to continue to do my job representing my district.”

Less clear is the plan of state Sen. Royce Duplessis, D-New Orleans, another rumored mayoral candidate.
Though Duplessis has raised substantial cash in recent months, political insiders say his plans have not crystallized. Duplessis did not respond to multiple inquiries this week.

People who work in city politics have also floated the name of Arthur Hunter as a potential candidate. Hunter parlayed a brief stint as a New Orleans police officer into more than two decades as a Criminal Court judge, where he was known as a champion for public defenders. Hunter, who finished third in the 2020 race for Orleans Parish district attorney, in a statement said that he’s thankful for the “buzz” around his potential candidacy.

Those people have been around for decades and haven't helped a thing. Absolutely nothing will change, just more of the same.

Yeah, I’m almost more worried about a “true believer” type like Moreno versus just unabashed grifters like Teedy or Thomas.
Imagine actually believing that what New Orleans really needs to help turn it around right now is a good healthy shot in the arm of West Coast style “progressivism”!

Per wikipedia:
“On August 13, 2007, [Oliver] Thomas resigned his council seat and pleaded guilty to a federal bribery charge. In late 2001 and early 2002, Thomas took $15,000 in kickbacks from Stan "Pampy" Barre, a local businessman and associate of then-mayor Marc Morial. Barre owned a company which operated a number of French Quarter parking lots under contract with the city, and paid Thomas in order to ensure that the Morial-era contracts would be renewed under the incoming administration. Thomas agreed to Barre's terms, but also demanded and received one-third of the parking profits in kickbacks through one of his associates. On November 21, 2007, Thomas was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for bribery.”

We have to fix the voting system so that cheating is difficult.
Then we need a Rudy Giuliani type to get in there and clean up. However, the people need to fight for it and I don't see it happening.

Helena Moreno is basically AOC with better manners & a much calmer demeanor. A professional version of her in short.

Lesser of two evils. I would have to go with Thomas he is a transactional politician ( they are all corrupt he just got caught ) but moderate on crime and taxes. Moreno is a communist feminist true woke believer and is aligned with Jason Williams I bet Thomas will win combining the Black vote with the conservative white vote which is how Nagin won especially his second term I think people underestimate how much the conservative white vote in Orleans, which is only about 10 to 15 pct of vote despise Moreno and Mitch Landrieu think of her as a female Mitchell Landrieu. Local media is will fawn over Helena line they did for Mitch

Exactly what is wrong with voting these days. Let's vote based off of sex, color, family name, looks, etc.

it’s a majority black city that leans heavily left.
I doubt there is any cheating really. That’s just how it is there.
The biggest problem is no one votes.
Fun bunch types will tell you no one ran against Latoya so they prob don’t vote even though several people ran against her, just no one voted for them.

And after he was released, he was elected back to the same city council on which he was previously convicted for accepting bribes.
We are a lost cause.
