As in 5% merit raise = x amount of PTO instead?

Bro, just be a school teacher and get off three weeks for Christmas and 10 weeks for summer.

Yes, I’m topped out salary wise but I’m pretty sure that I can get 2 more weeks of PTO if I ask.

I’ve just always asked for a salary increase and never asked for more PTO.

It's an interesting question I guess. Would you be setting a new HR question if you asked, and granted PTO? A new paradigm across the board?

I’ve been with this company for a while and I know everyone on our jobsites pay rate and how much PTO they have and as far as I can tell no one has ever asked for more PTO.

I don't see the downside of at least asking, but be prepared for the hard no response. You could be setting a precedent they would weigh and not want with everyone else.

I guess the real question you should be asking yourself is why you aren’t promotable?

I never burn all my PTO up and we can only carry over 80 hours.

Last time I looked I had 120 hours remaining this year

I have unlimited vacation where I work. Pretty sure the company figured most would take less than accrued vacation we had so I make sure I take a little extra for those that don't take enough.

Sure, last job I took I told them 2 months off to start or there was no need to talk further. No problem. After a few years it became 6 months off. Now I just work when they ask and I agree, a month or two a year.

It's nice to phase into retirement on your own terms, but I also had more leverage than most.

After being employed? No. Before? Yes. It usually the easiest get. The most recent deal I added two weeks of vacation a year. I work about as much as a school teacher.

No, I just take off and don’t report it. I don’t have to go into an office though so as long as I respond to email/phone then no one knows any different.

If you divide your salary by the number of days you work you get your daily rate, fairly simple math.

Take that with what PTO request you have and go from there.

Many companies do PTO by 3 or 5 year increments. So 0-5 years is 3 weeks of PTO, 5-10 is 4 weeks of PTO, etc. Many will add experience to that so if you come in with 7 years experience that may count.

I think bringing in some justification and simple math to the request would go a long way.

Why is your pay capped out?

No, but I’ve had a lot of people negotiate with me for more PTO. One of these episodes led to a very memorable line by my business partner.

We were trying to hire a guy who was asking for a lot of PTO, and my business partner said, “Tell him we’re hiring workers, not vacationers.”

Loved that line!

I was on call 24/7/365 for years, vacations frequently interrupted by calls, one time they sent the company seaplane to pick me up in Pensacola. I settled for 3-1, three days off if a day was interrupted. At least when cell phones arrived I didn't have to go find a payphone in some remote area when my pager went off.

I started my own business at 52 so I had less stress.

I have always thought of that. But you ask teachers and they would say that they are buried those two weeks around Christmas grading papers and making lesson plans for the next half of the year. Summers are spent cleaning and redecorating classrooms and making lesson plans for next school year.

I would still take that as you work on your own pace and you set the workload. Depending on the subject those papers could take seconds to grade if done right. And now with every kid having laptops, an online test should be graded instantly.

Grading English essays on the other hand would alway be lengthy.

Yes, years ago. Had 3 weeks at the current job and asked for the same at the new job. They accepted in writing.

The only weird thing is that the HR system was continually confused to the point I was basically keeping up with it myself. And my boss that hired me was gone within a year. As well as the HR person. And then my company was spun off, acquired and acquired again so this company really has no clue. But I have 5 weeks+ just based on years of service and I don't worry about it anymore.
