We have a 340 sq ft space with a window unit. The window unit is 14,000 btu. The temp yesterday got up to 85, so it’s just not cooling.

Any ideas on what we can do to cool the area more effectively?

Is the window unit working correctly, what are the splits, how long did you run it?
14k should turn 340 sqft into a walk in fridge
What is the insulation situation, ?

When's the last time you cleaned the coils?

It was a pool house so insulation is non existent. It runs pretty much 24/7. I’m not sure that it’s working correctly. Probably not.

What coils? How do you do that?

So, you have absolutely no idea how window units work is what you're saying...

If nothing else, check out some u-tube videos of how to clean a window unit.

It will require removing the unit from the case, bring it outside and show you how to safely clean the coils of dirt and debris. Then let it dry out some and replace.

Also, how to clean the filter that is just behind the plastic face of the unit that helps catch dust, pet hair, etc. from getting on the coils.

Is it in direct sunlight? Shading it can help.

Good advise. I did this with my 8000 btu and used coil cleaner and pressure washer from a distance. The 110 plug on my unit is a cheapo with circuit braker that is not totally sealed and I let it hang to the ground while washing AC. Water seeped in and breaker would blow. It was a nightmare finding the correct bit to fit that china frickin screw that held the breaker cover together.

Long story short, put the plug in a ziplock and tape it up good to keep it dry if anyone washes out their unit.

If the inside temp got up to 85 degrees, it is not cooling all. If the fan was actually running, I don’t think there is much else to do besides throw it away and buy another one.

I think you may be right. New one is being delivered tomorrow. I mainly wanted to verify I wasn’t nuts to think this thing should be working better.

If other items are plugged into same outlet, unplug them.
Ideally, it would have its own circuit.

Currently looking for a new 8,000 btu window unit for emergency use during power outages.

Anyone have any brand recommendations or brands/types to avoid?

Frigidaire if you can find one. I put a GE in my aunt's place and I haven't been impressed. I've already replaced the control panel on it. And get one that has the least amount of digital bells and whistles. I loathe the fact that you just about can't find one now without bluetooth.

Yeah, I had a Frigidaire that I loaned to someone that needed it but I dont think I'm getting it back. It was an old school analog with dials. Most of the stuff I'm seeing now is all digital with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

That's about all you can get. You'll still be better off with a new Frigidaire over most others. When I looked a couple years ago you could still find one without bluetooth, but the other digital stuff is in all ot them now.

Inside coils you spray with coil acid and wet Vac. Outside coils you spray with condenser acid and then water.
I've never removed an AC to clean it. You can get at the coils usually really easy.

If coils are clean it could have a freon leak. Window units can take crazy varieties of refrigerants so few people will fix a sealed system issue.
