Bands That Weren't Cool When You Were Young (But Are Cool Now)

See the title. I am not talking about bands you hated back then but love now. I am more talking about bands that were not perceived as cool or "in fashion" by most people, but are now considered cool retroactively by society.
I was a 1990's teen. When I was in school, the 80's metal bands were not cool at all. This included (to a lesser extent) the glam hair bands, but especially applied to the harder metal bands. If you wore a Metallica or Megadeth t-shirt in 1994, you were made fun of and sat in your own section of the cafeteria. Even though Metallica sold a ton of records in the early 90's, they weren't considered cool by teens in my day. Only the outcasts or "white trash" baws wore metal t-shirts at my school. But now bands and fashion like that is considered cool again.
Do you have any examples from your time period?

I was in high school in the early 2000's, so it was the same thing but with Slipknot, ICP, and the like. If you wore something like that, you immediately got lumped in with/sat at the table with the kids who hadn't discovered deodorant yet.

Beach Boys. I thought of them as gimmick surfer pop for a long time until I listened to Pet Sounds the whole way through. Then Smile came out and blew my mind. Kinks would probably be another. I always thought their early stuff rocked (friends brother had One for the Road that we listened to a lot) but hearing Village Green really opened my eyes. Frank Sinatra and Van Morrison are two others i grew to really love.

At my school (late 2000’s), it was the opposite. If you didn’t like those bands, you were a f$&king loser among losers. The actual popular kids just listened to hip hop, but the mid-tier kids (not the ones dating the prom queen but who still threw parties, played a sport, and had gfs) were all into heavy music. In fact, Slipknot was considered borderline “pussy” music to them. If you listened to clean vocals, you might as well just start sucking dick, because you were gay.
With that said, the following bands have become retroactively cool since then: Weezer, My Chemical Romance, Metallica, Limp Bizkit, All Time Low, Creed.
Other than Limp Bizkit, those were all bands I loved at the time and got the shite bullied out of me for liking.
Every wannabe rock star at my school just wanted to be the next Pantera, and they all formed unbelievably shitty rip off bands for a few years there.

On a much smaller scale, more pop-rock acts went from lame to well-appreciated by the "cooler" kids through the course of my HS years.
For example, we all thought Matchbox 20 was lame at one point, but within a couple of years we'd all have attested to Rob Thomas being talented. Stuff like that. Same for Counting Crows, similar acts.

Yeah, this is 100% accurate for my experience as well. I guess we were considered mid-tier: played in heavier bands (i.e., ETID, Botch, The Black Dahlia Murder, Cattle Decapitation), hooked up with volleyball players and cheerleaders, ran track, etc.
Anyone who listened to Slipknot or bands like that were considered trashy.

I was in high school in the mid 90s. Metallica was never considered not cool, even after Load came out. You people must have gone to some loser schools.

In the 1980s I didn't like the Talking Heads. Around 2000 I was at a Leftover Salmon show and the preshow was TH's Stop Making Sense video concert... I ate some mushrooms for the LS show, but damn I was mad when they stopped the video to play the main concert.
Since then I've been a TH and David Byrne fan.

I know Weezer has a huge fanbase but I dunno if they’re considered “cool” now. They’ve always seemed like pencil necked dorks. Creed still gets shite on a lot in my experience. MCR is a good answer but not my taste at all. Limp Bizkit is more polarizing now, just depends on who you talk to. I actually like them more now than I did when I was younger (nonsensical, I know).
I think a good answer for this is the Pixies. They were before my time, but from what I understand they were just considered oddball weirdos that didn’t really fit in anywhere or in any specific scene. I know they eventually got some college radio play but never sold that many records. Nowadays they’re on the Mt. Rushmore of indie rock and absolutely rake on the reunion circuit.

TH have always been cool as frick, just not in the stereotypical rockstar way. They’re cool because of how unique they were. Can’t speak on how they were perceived in the 80s cuz I wasn’t around.

Nobody I knew growing up listened to country music... sure, everyone knew and liked the odd song here and there... but nobody listened to a steady diet of country music (radio)...
I think it had more of a resurgence with younger crowds in the later 80s/early 90s...

I agree with this example. They came out when I was in high school. Other than Monkey Gone to Heaven, don't think many people liked them Their song Here Comes Your Man was in heavy rotation on MTV and was annoying as f*ck. Little did we know then how legit Kim Deal was.
Come to think of it, talking heads was another band that was SUPER annoying when I was younger and I grew to really like them later in life. Burning Down the House got HEAVY airplay on MTV as well.

One reason Talking Heads has become popular again is Paramore. They’re selling out arenas right now performing an album that they’ve talked a lot about how much it’s inspired by Talking Heads. Paramore is also opening for Taylor Swift on some big stadium dates.

As some said earlier, country music was pretty uncool and considered music for either old people or rednecks. Now everyone wears boots and listens to Zach Bryan while rocking their brand new Johnny Cash shirts.
I’ll throw in Iron Maiden. Only the smelliest weirdo anime kids liked them in school, now they have racks of shirts at Forever21 that all the teeny bopper girls buy up like crazy.
