A weekend trip to Florida turned deadly for three young Birmingham-area fathers who died after getting caught in a rip current at Panama City Beach.

The Bay County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims as Harold Denzel Hunter, 25, Jemonda Ray, 24, and Marius Richardson, also 24.

The three men were part of a group of six who arrived in Panama City Beach on Friday to stay at an Airbnb. Ray’s girlfriend, Richardson’s wife, and one of Hunter’s cousins also made the trip.

“They checked into their rental and rushed out to get in the water,’’ said Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford.

They entered the water about 8 p.m. and were quickly swept away in the rip current. The men were in chest-deep water when they became distressed.

What an awful story. Their lives gone after stupidly jumping in the water at sunset as soon as they arrived at the beach.

Horrible news.

I wish more people knew what to do in that situation.

I never get in the water at beaches. Zero upside and many ways for stuff to go bad

dont go past your thighs. Even that deep you may not be able to fight the current when its really pulling. Dangerous shite man. People just dont realize how dangerous it is until its too late

Curious to see how the OT reacts to this sad drowning story compared to all the other sad drowning stories in the past that were posted.

Is it just because people freak out and don't know to not try to fight it? To let it take you out, swim parallel and then come back in.

Is it that they know, and the still just get exhausted due to the power of the gulf/riptides?

IDK, just seems like mid 20's dudes would have the stamina if they had the knowledge, but nature is crazy powerful.

One of these is very different than the others.

It checks out though since this happened in Alabama.

The sun is going down and visibility is lessening by the minute? There were red flags due to the waves and potential for rip tides?

I don’t know. Running out to chest deep water at 8pm in the gulf is a decision I don’t think I’d ever make.

If you are a strong swimmer you can tread or float for hours. But they get scared and fight it, rather than letting it take them out and then swimming back in or waiting for rescue.
