Holy shite what a disturbing and harrowing look at a very real potential future.
I could definitely see it playing out like it does in the book (aftermath of high altitude nuke detonation over continental USA - EMP)

I loved the book and generally like the post-apocalyptic genre, but they aren’t based in any sort of reality.
They are great fiction, but not analogous to potential futures.

Not sure why they never made this into a movie. I know there were talks of a trilogy.
With the garbage they have been churning out, this would be a slam dunk.

Why?
Not calling you a liar I just don’t know.

EMPs as described in that book are hypothetical.

The impact of an EMP may not have been accurately described in One Second After, but I know a couple of very bright engineers who are in that world and according to them our grid has very vulnerable pressure points. It would not be repaired quickly if people with a little knowledge decided to snackbar the US.

This IMO is a far greater threat than a hypothetical EMP. Organized attacks on the grid in 6 or 7 key locations would be catastrophic to the country.

If you liked that then you’d probably like Patriots The premise is a collapse of society after major economic crash.

Good thing we are letting a bunch of terrorists and enemy combatants walk right across the border.

Cars still work though for short term in a grid attack, much worse with EMP. could you imagine your wife going shopping 20 miles away and her car stop working, phones stop working, everyone being on alert where you’d be cautious of everyone?

I know, right. Defies logic. Only two plausible explanations: stupidity or design

True but this is just theory. Never been tested and proven. How could it have been?

With that logic sub stations would probably be okay too. Most things are ran by computers though and would definitely matter where the blast occurs. If they emp us I think it would be over regardless because we’d be launching retaliatory ICBMs.

The efficacy of EMPs are very limited and the range is not great.
Their utter destruction of all electronics is greatly exaggerated to the point of pure fiction.
Sure, the grid can be damaged. But what about the millions of generators that exist, as well as local power plants that can quickly be rerouted to power the local populace? The grid as a whole could be taken offline, but locales could still have power.
Again, I love the genre but it’s just mostly bullshite. The United States is too big and it would take all out nuclear war to achieve that sort of result.

I’ve though a bout a similar situation - what would you do if you were on a work trip away from your family, no car - you flew, (say 8-10 hr drive away) and one of these emp/grid attacks occur. How would you get home? What would yo do?
I think I’d try to steal a bike and figure out how to load up supplies/water and start pedaling.

The idea that an EMP just takes all electronics and cars offline instantly has never been real. It’s science fiction.
Sure, maybe the electronics in a small area very near the site, but over hundreds of miles? No.

not only is it fiction, but most books on the subject completely ignore US countermeasures, or our own ability to deploy those kind of attacks. nothing is 0%, but it’s as close to 0% as anything in geopolitics
