I did this for a conference a few years ago. We stayed at Hawks Cay on Duck key and it was really nice. For the life of me I can not remember where we stayed at Key West, was really nice and easy walking distance to everything, many great restaurants.

only way to go we’ve done it several times, fly into Miami and rent a nice car. The drive is beautiful once you get out of town and you can explore the entire island chain. We always stay in marathon it’s centrally located and you can go either direction
Key west is great for a day trip. Park and rent bikes or scooters. You can rent a 19’ Cape Horn in marathon and go fishing/snorkeling etc on your own, the place we stay has a dock and you can keep it overnight
Tons of restaurants bars etc it’s a wonderful place. Don’t miss sunsets at lorelei in islamorada, and definitely hit up the tiki bar at holiday isle

I have done that trip twice. Once on a motorcycle from Houston and once from Miami in a car. Closer you get to Key West the lower the speed limits get which is good because the views are wonderful. Take your time and enjoy. Speed traps are the norm.
We ate at Keys Fisheries in Marathon, The Stoned Crab in KW, Hogfish Bar & Grill in Stock Island, 5 Brothers in KW (hole in the wall real Cuban deli), Schooner Warf Bar in KW. We did Louies Backyard in KW and were disappointed. Won't go back. Lots of scooters with inexperienced riders, be careful. Lots of eye candy. Duval Street is a must!

Stay in old town Key West, there’s a million options and just stay close to Duval.
If you’re wanting to take a couple days to get there, I’d stop in Key Largo and Islamorada or Marathon. Hard to give recs based on not knowing your interest or age, but definitely get on the water. Jet ski tours, sunset tours, parasailing.
Truman White House is overrated. Hemingway house is really cool. Get on the Conch train right when you get there so you can get a lay of the land. Mallory Square is definitely a must for sunsets. Really enjoyed the comedy club. Fishing charters are cheap if that’s something that interest you, but do your research.
Going down, there’s a huge turtle hospital where you can visit the turtles that they’re healing. Also there are a few museums along the way like the history of diving museum. Stop at the Key Largo visitors center, they have good maps and a quick 5-10 minute description of things to see and do along the way.

La Concha on Duvall in key west. In the middle of everything

When passing through, the route you're taking, we stopped in Islamorada for a couple nights to do some fishing and stay at a quieter key before heading to key west.
We stayed at a little mom and pop hotel called Coral Bay Resort that some locals recommended. You have to call them for reservations. They were inexpensive yet great. Had their own private boat launch, little bay for swimming, and a pool.

Download the Gypsy Guide is now GuideAlong. They make one for the Keys and are a great way to learn as you drive.

Great little hole in the wall Cuban place in Marathon, called La Niña.
Everything there is good, coffee, Cuban sandwiches, dinner plates, and guava pastries.

How many days should I plan to stay in Key West?

We did this last year - we rented a house in marathon and drove around everyday
The pizza place in marathon - coast to coast - was wonderful (we had teenage boys with us)
Island Fish Co & Porky’s Bayside in marathon were great, too.
We went to the islamorada brewery & distillery and the midway cafe
In Key West we went to Blue Heaven which was fantastic and a great atmosphere. Also tried the Hogfish Grill which was fun.
It’s a beautiful drive and so much to see. We also chartered a boat and explored the keys that way.
My kids liked it better than Disney world

Who is going? You and your spouse? Kids?

We did this a few years ago and while it was a nice drive I will never do it again. It is a long trip on a 2 lane road so next time I am just flying to Key West. If you have never done it I would say, go for it, but I will not do it again.
Now Key West was one of the most fun places I ever went on Vacation to. We had a blast there!

More than half of your nights should be in Key West.
ETA: Stop at Alabama Jacks asking the way, will probably be your first taste of the Keys

Came to say the same thing. Also, snorkeling in Key Largo's state park is cheap and awesome

If you’re driving down from Miami, stop at Robbie’s marine in islamorada and feed the tarpons. It’s a quick stop, kind of a dive, but very unique to the keys. Hand feeding a 50 pound tarpon is a just a cool experience.

To give you an idea of what Key West is like, it reminded me a lot of New Orleans, except it's one of the safest cities in America. It's also very expensive, just FYI.
It kinda depends on what you like to do. If you like to eat and drink and explore cities, you could probably spend several days there.
In Key West, Nine One Five was fantastic (restaurant).
In Islamorada, Square Grouper was very good.
