Good interview. I didn’t realize that it had been so long since they retired. Time flies.

When REM was young, The Rolling Stones were old

I always liked that all their songs were credited to Berry, Buck, Mills, Stipe...

Songwriting royalty splits has gotta be the leading cause of most band break ups...

that or the lead singer goes solo, a dynamic that goes back to Whiteman/Crosby & Dorsey/Sinatra

that he regretted leaving after a while had passed. The other three clearly didn’t know that

Billy Corgan talked about that in an interview. He said he was warned early on by someone at the record company that he should share credits for the sake of the band's longevity, but he thought he deserved the credit for doing all the writing and was happy to take the money. Later on, he realized they might have done better in the long run by sharing.

An amazing band. Such a broad discography that they have performed some of my favorite songs as well as some songs I absolutely loathe.

That's the way it goes for real artists - Dylan, Bowie, Prince, Neil Young - they all made astonishing songs and albums and they also made absolute garbage. If Around the Sun is the price for getting an Out of Time and Murmur, so be it.

Exactly, that’s the main reason the other guys in The Band especially Levon ended up resenting Robbie so much , he got all the money for the writing credits for their material, sad to see stuff like that happen.

After Nevermind exploded, Kurt Cobain decided he wanted a bigger share of Nirvana's songwriting, being that he was the public face of the band and everything. I can't remember how it got settled, but I remember reading the band damn near broke up and there was bad blood over it until the end.

IMO Prince should not be mentioned with these other three. I appreciate his individual talent, but he produced nowhere near the amount of great music that these others did.

What? Neil Young is a hack. You should be ashamed for mentioning him with Prince.

Young made a few decent albums. Prince didn't.
