This is a joke, right?

I love Mainieri and thank him for everything he did for the LSU program, but there are a ton of coaches that SC could go after that would be better suited.

I hope they hire him. And I hope they pay him an obscene amount of money.

does he want to come out of retirement for that gig? didn't they run their last coach out of town?

I figured they might kick the tires on Wanaka.

Hiring a 66 year old coach who was clearly burned out by the grind of being an SEC baseball coach at a program with high expectations. Bold strategy for USC. I don't see Paul even considering taking a job like that either at his current stage in life.

Good, maybe all the Jay Johnson haters like GA Tiger will stop posting here and start trolling SCar boards

They fired their last two coaches. One of which was bitching about being left out of the tournament this year for 13-17 SEC teams getting in because he was fired for going 13-17 and not making the tourney at South Carolina.

Then they fired his successor for going 13-17 and making the tourney.

He's got too much time invested at the UClub golf course to move to SC.

His name popped up for Miami last year and Notre Dame the year before that.

Someone keeps floating his name out there, and I can't think it's a coincidence.

I thought he publicly stated he was done with coaching last year when the Miami rumors popped up

Every coach since Tanner, I believe.

I can think of one he used to have that may not be the most liked in his current position right now.

Well, I guess I may not be seeing him in that foursome in front of me at U Club anymore.

They shouldn’t have to pursue him too hard. He is certainly available and I don’t think people are beating his door down.

If they can’t make a deal with him, maybe they can go after Skip.

I do wish Paul the very best though, unless they are playing us.

He was allegedly supposed to interview for the Miami job and pulled his name before the interview. He shut the Notre Dame rumors down before they even took off. He had direct connections to both, having coached at Notre Dame before and being from Miami. I just don't see his wife being down with him moving to Columbia, SC at his age when his kids and grandkids are in Baton Rouge. IIRC he lives a couple houses down from his daughter now.

Yep. It's not like he has to work, nor is he trying to leverage a raise at his current job. So I can't imagine his name gets floated for jobs without his desire for it to be out there.

More likely is that he would consider coaching again if he feels the right position presented itself. South Carolina has good facilities and interest in the program. They haven't reached the CWS in over a decade. While he may have grown stale at LSU, he did reach the CWS 5x here.

USC went with the continuity hire (Holbrook) after Tanner retired. Didn't work. They then went with the mid-major hire (Kingston). Didn't work. Mainieri, even at 66, presents more of a "sure thing" than most. It's not like he had bottomed out at LSU when he left. He had reached the Super Regionals in his final two seasons and recruited the core of what would become the 2023 National Champs.
