The James Beard Foundation will present its annual culinary awards tonight (June 10), and this time around New Orleans has three contenders vying for these high-profile accolades. Two names from neighboring Mississippi are also in the running. Winners will be named during an awards ceremony in Chicago that begins at 5:30 p.m. James Beard awards are closely watched across the hospitality industry. New Orleans has historically had many contenders each year, though for two years running, in 2022 and 2023, none ended up winning a chef or restaurant award. Before that, the last time no New Orleans name came away with one of these awards was 2012. The James Beard Foundation said its roster of nominees was selected from thousands of chefs, restaurants and bars submitted by the public during an open call last fall.

Have you been to Dakar? I never hear of anyone that has gone there.

I have not nor do I know anyone who has been. The menus typically don’t strongly appeal to me especially at the price point.

went a while back

Would like to see what changed, but honestly haven't had the time lately.

Setup to win Beard awards for sure. Chef is charismatic and can bring you in for the experience.

Just read the review and it looks and sounds very good but I don't know that we'll make it. I looked at reservations but have a mental block to prepaying, especially service. Now up to two seating it looks like the hype train is only starting.

Curious which people like more between this age Saint Germain. Each are $150. I think I prefer Dakar's setup with seatings and heading from the chef. Saint-Germaine sounds pretty full of it and not accommodating, but curious if that's true or a misperception.

Food is amazing, but honestly you are paying an upcharge for a personal/small group eating experience that you can only get in a few places.

Think of it as a chef's table dinner, and plan a relaxing evening around it. Definitely not for everyone, especially picky eaters, and at the price point its only for a very, very special occasion for me.

Also cheers to Jewel, great bar, great spot, great people running it.

Saint Germain is awesome, I have been twice. I think its the best place i have been to in NOLA.

I have not been to Dakar as it does not appeal to me and I thought the menu price was out of wack. I'm sure its great

It surprises me this didn’t get more conversation on here. Winning the James Beard for best new restaurant is a hell of an accomplishment.

I guess I’m pretty shocked that they won it in a city where I spend a lot of my food dollars and haven’t been. It still doesn’t trigger me to want to go. It still feels like a terrible value to me when I look at the menus they have presented.

The reason we talked a lot about Turkey & the Wolf is that it was an inexpensive enough place that most posters could actually go to. A much smaller percentage of this board can actually afford fine dining at places like this year’s winner.

Fair point. If I’m going to drop $500 for dinner and booze, I want to be excited about the menu. The menus that I have seem never intrigue me enough I suppose.

I have never dropped $500 on a week’s worth of dinners let alone one.

I've heard that Dakar is solid, but not worth the price tag.

With modern food criticism, I've personally encountered too many instances where the praise seems to be influenced by the story of a chef or restaurant more than even the food.

No clue if that's what's happening for Dakar, but I'm reticent to drop that kind of coin without talking to someone I personally trust with firsthand knowledge.

Yes, this matters a lot, unfortunately its not just about the product. I'm not in the restaurant or food industry, but have close friends who are, and we sometimes socialize with them in groups with other food industry people, including some names mentioned on this board. Food people can be cliquish and super snooty, especially with people who don't get food and drink like they do. Not all, but some. Its a little like going to a top 10 MBA or law school, doesn't make you better, but gives you more opportunities to move up and get recognized, and to all get investors for your new restaurant project.

I’m sure that’s the case a lot of times. And in the last four years the minority lean seems to have been happening too in regards to the chef stories.
