I don't think anyone but Tom Hanks could have played the character of Forest and did as well as he did acting like a semi-retard (correct terminology?) Probably my third favorite movie next to Shawshank and the Godfather.

I believe Forrest had an IQ in between 70-79 (from the scene with the principal), which would put Forrest in the "borderline intellectual functioning" range.

in the book he's actually an autistic savant

and after reading the book... you know that only Tom Hanks could have played him

(seriously, read the book if you haven't.. it's one of my all time favorites)

Sean Penn. I think he is playing a retard in half of his movies.

Really? I read the book last year and was pretty disappointed by it. One of the few occasions where I thought the movie was better than the book.

Agree. There were passages were I had to stop reading due to laughing out loud. The movie was very good but the book was great.

I'd have to agree with you. I listened to most of the book while on a plane, but I was glad that the movie went some directions that the book didn't.

Do you all realize that people in Alabama love this movie the way we love Steel Magnolias?

Being from Alabama, I gotta say that the state's love for this movie cannot be emphasized. Every person in the state seems to have memorized the entire movie.

What is Steel Magnolias?

I think he played a child in the movie. His excitement at simple things was an almost childlike glee.

I never see Tom Hanks. I always see Forrest Gump.
