Question for Those Who Moved Away From Louisiana

For those of you who have been able to leave Louisiana and move elsewhere, did you find that your life drastically improved when you settled in a new place? Did most things in life get better or stay the same?

I think you unfortunately know the answer to this.

Depends on what you are expecting to change and where you move.
Career and quality of living went way up. Made friends pretty quickly through lsu alumni groups and events. S. Louisiana people tend to find each other anywhere. It took me 2 years to get over the homesickness but I never considered moving back and don’t think I ever could.

Summary of responses:
Everything is better, so glad we made the moved.*
*But we do miss family

Yes. Things are drastically better. Nashville. Crime is non existent where I live. Nice people. Everything comes to Nashville so there’s always something to do.

I left for an opportunity. My life got better with that opportunity and growing up. I love Louisiana and miss the food, family and culture. You lose that feeling of home and Arizona never really feels like home to me, even after 24 years. I will never move back because 2 of my 3 kids have settled here and I have a business here, but I do wish I could have stayed in Louisiana from time to time.

Immensely better. I live north of Houston in Montgomery County. We have everything we need if you seek a life in the suburbs.
When Louisiana was a blue state, life was not that good. Now Louisiana is a red state and life there is still not good.

I miss it there sometimes, but overall quality of life for me is much higher.
Job opportunities are greater, pay is greater, people are kinder, head is not constantly on a swivel, weather is better, and I absolutely love where I live.

Went from Watson to Houston in 2013 and it was great. We just moved to Magnolia MS and it's still better than Louisiana.

I’ve moved away 7 times, it’s hard to really say at this point.

Improved - wasn't a state of blissfulness - but the children received a better education, my career opportunities improved and continue, as have for my wife.
Downside, distance from families..

I find that when I travel out of Louisiana, it feels like I’m going to the future. It used to be a mild difference, but now it feels like we’re living 10-20 years behind areas that are thriving, and the gap is only growing.

Life is what you make it. Every time I've made a choice of significance or accomplished something, I realize that being a cpa or moving to Colorado or being a home owner doesn't really change who I am on a base level. If you're depressed and it has multiple components, just moving will not change things.

Do y’all still drive a Prius or have you gone full electric?

Put it this way. I don't miss hurricanes, the ridiculous insurance rates, taxes, and the lousy politicians.

Yes and it's not even close. Louisiana is great if you can find your way but ever since I moved my life went from a 4/10 to a 8/10.
No offense to the baws that still live there but every time I go back it just reminds me how shitty and poor LA is

Don't think it's that simple, especially for those of us that left after college.
I was really really ready to be gone. That said, when I left at 22 after college, I did get some home sickness.
Louisiana is a unique place and a place that i'm proud to be from in a lot of ways. People are always curious about LA and generally have endearing things to say about it when they find out i'm from there.
But for all the good, there is a lot that's beyond f*cked and never going to change. So I left and never looked back as far as moving back.
So, yes, better in a lot of ways, but it will always be home.
