BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Critics of a new Louisiana law, which makes it a crime to approach within 25 feet (7.6 meters) of a police officer under certain circumstances, fear that the measure could hinder the public’s ability to film officers — a tool that has increasingly been used to hold police accountable.

Under the law, anyone who is convicted of “knowingly or intentionally” approaching an officer, who is “lawfully engaged in the execution of his official duties,” and after being ordered to “stop approaching or retreat” faces up to a $500 fine, up to 60 days in jail or both. The law was signed by Gov. Jeff Landry, a Republican, Tuesday and goes into effect Aug. 1.

While the legislation’s language does not specifically mention filming, critics say that by default it would limit how close a person can be to observe police. Opponents have also gone further to question the law’s constitutionality, saying it could impede on a person’s First Amendment rights.

Nice.

BTW. Cameras don’t magically turn on at 24 feet.

I don’t know how this would hold up to judicial scrutiny.

What right do you have according to the law to shove your camera in the face of an officer doing his duty?

Can you sit in his lap to film?

Is 10 feet enough? How close do you want to be?

The first amendment, if you remove your qualifier.

As long as it's not directly interfering with his physical/tactile ability to do his job. Maybe 5 feet? 3 feet?

How far away would you need to be to not physically interfere?

Considering the loons usually filming between 10-25 feet.

The more dangerous the interaction the further away you people should be.

Sane people would stay at least that far away.

Sanity isn’t big in such situations though.

None of the gawkers and protesters are ever gonna stay 25’ away. But at least if they know a law exists, some of them won’t be directly up the officer’s arse like in the past. They wrote it as 25 so they get 10 in reality.

Question is, how enforceable is it? They’re gonna go to the tape measure and instant replay a lot.

Looks like it’s the “conservatives” rejoicing.

If someone is on public property, why would it matter? Why should police get special “protections”?

Soooo... here's a litmus test:

Would this be enforced on a line of protesters 3 inches away from LEO yelling obscenities?

Would it infringe on right of assembly?
If not, is there an overlapping law already on the books?

Stupid law is stupid. When was the last time an officer was killed with a camera? If you don't want to be filmed being an a-hole, don't be an a-hole. Seems pretty simple to me. 1st amendment Trumps your fear of of a cell phone. Just ignore the camera ego maniac.

I'd rather a Republic without a police state. The dolts with thin blue egos already have enough unchecked power. Little to no accountability for the tyrants.

If we didn't have assholes we wouldn't need laws at all.

I don't know that this won't be abused but I get the intent. If you're in a volatile situation, arresting a local and surrounded by a bunch of antifa, methheads or dindus, it's not safe to have people crowding up behind you. 20ft is considered danger close with a blade.

Yo slowflo is that your medical condition? Must be because that backed up urine must be affecting your brain. It not up to you to decide how close you can be to an offucer. Perps many times go for a cops gun or tries to beat him up. Frick you libtard you are part of the reason crime is out of control.
