Preliminary groundwork already is underway for the American, Conference-USA, Mid-American, Mountain West and SunBelt conferences to have an official Group of Five Top 25 national poll, with voting open only to head coaches in those leagues. Independent programs UConn and UMass also will be included in the rankings, pushing the number of teams involved to be approximately 64.

Sources tell FootballScoop that the burgeoning movement already has a title sponsor for the rankings.

Organizers of the prospective poll believe that a proprietary ranking for the G-5 leagues, with every head coach receiving a vote, could spark greater interest in potential broadcasting deals and programmining.

"If the No. 2 team in the Group of Five is playing at the No. 6 Group of Five team, that's going to attract more viewers," as it was told to FootballScoop.

Good...The G5 is in playoff purgatory. I would even suggest the G5 seek out a few of the premier FCS conferences like the MVC, Big Sky, Colonial and expand to the G8 and let them have their own playoff. The FCS has 13 conferences and the champ usually comes from one of those 3 premier conferences. Let the FCS go to 10 conferences and have more parity.

Not a bad idea at all in theory.

With that said, this could also be a signal of the inevitable break with the P4, which WILL be the final straw in the demise of college football as we know it.

Honestly they could do their own "NIT" type playoff. use it to determine seeding, and if a G5 team takes a playoff spot then seeds move up

G5 needs its own playoff system where each game is played on campus until a championship game.

That is because they know it is inevitable the power conferences will break from the NCAA and form their own league. One where teams in the G5 conferences aren't invited.

That means those schools are going to be left in purgatory and they really don't want to move "down" to the FCS. They essentially trying to lay the groundwork for becoming the the new FCS, with 24 team playoff, when the power conferences eventually split.

Actually pretty good forethought by the G5 schools. They aren't stopping the inevitable split. So they may as well start positioning themselves for it

Yep. This is merely the first step to a split in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The power conferences are going to go their separate ways and so will the G5. It's now a matter of when and not if.

Apparently there is discussion among the G5 for a G5 only playoff with the winner getting the G5 CFP spot.

We need relegation from the power 4 to the G5

The G5 could get some attention if they slotted a week late in the season purely for non-con matchups that would be determined mid way through the season. Similar to the Bracket Buster in College Basketball they did a few years ago. Like if you have two undefeated G5 teams playing the week where most of the SEC schools are playing FCS cupcakes, I think that could be a good idea
