Nazi Germany surrendered to the Allies on this day 79 years ago...

Happy VE-Day! At 2:45 AM on the morning of May 7, 1945, Chief of the OKW, General Alfred Jodl, signed the instrument of surrender of the Wehrmacht at General Dwight D. Eisenhower's headquarters in Reims, France. The surrender would officially go into effect at midnight on May 8, however a general cease-fire was declared all across the line to avoid what happened on November 11, 1918 with the armistice that ended World War I.
Winston Churchill would announce the news of the German surrender over the radio on the morning of May 8, explaining to the British people and the rest of the world that the war in Europe had finally come to an end after almost six years of bloody fighting the likes of which the planet had never seen before.
The reaction across the world was unrestrained ecstasy as millions of people celebrated the end of hostilities.

Should have made the commies surrender while we were in domination mode.

We're headed back to Hawaii in a few weeks and plan to spend Memorial Day at Pearl Harbor. Looking forward to a new feeling in a familiar location.

Imagine if Hitler didn’t start a war on two fronts before completely conquering Europe/England.
Things would have gone very differently.

Couldn't you have held onto this until next year and made it an even 80. Everyone would have been much happier. Now we all have this foreboding feeling of something being undone.

9 months later started the baby boom.

The Communists were also in domination mode

Great pictures.
Especially the second one with Guinness is good for you. I suspect that plenty of alcohol was consumed that day.

I have a photograph of my grandfather in his uniform holding a newspaper with the headline of Germany’s surrender the next day. He’s somewhere in Europe.
Maybe I should see if that Rainbolt guy could find the exact location for me.

While I hate the communists and generally agree with your post a lot of us probably wouldn’t be here today had we gone to war with the soviets.
The battles and bloodshed from a war between the soviets and US/UK would’ve been on an even larger scale than what we saw bw the Germans/Soviets. Both my grandfathers were a year or two young for WW2 but they would’ve been in the meat grinder had we gone to war with the commie reds.
It wouldn’t of been a sure victory and probably a long drawn out bloody stalemate unless we pulled out the nukes

I think we fought the wrong ones

Both mine were in WW2, and I’m pretty sure they were ready to come home and squirt out kids once that war was over. They wanted nothing to do with more fighting. Can’t blame em.

Outstanding victory for the soviets.
Pretty pathetic that the US tries to act like they defeated the nazis…it was the ussr that put in 90% of the work

Have an upvote. Stalin was begging the other Allied powers to attack from the west. The US dragged their arse for two years while the ussr suffered major casualties all with the "threat" of Japan attacking from the East.
