What ever happened to these trucks? I saw so many back in the 70s. Never see them on the interstate anymore.

I liked them because Optimus prime

Has the aerodynamics of a brick. Truck companies are chasing efficiency due to fleets and the govt pushing them to be for fuel efficient.
Also they had some funky weight distribution that can impact how it scales.

Harder to drive. Harder to work on. More dangerous in a crash. Not as comfortable.

Fck what happened to them.

Agreed with fuel efficiency, also I’m sure safety plays a big part, I’d think that sitting that close to a potential impact point isn’t very friendly to the living.

It was the dark of the moon
On the sixth of June
In a Kenworth, pullin' logs
Cabover Pete with a reefer on
And a Jimmy haulin' hogs
We was headin' for bear
On 'I-1-0
'Bout a mile out Shakey Town
I says, Pig Pen this here's the Rubber Duck
And I'm about to put the hammer down

I may be pulling this out of my a$$ but I vaguely remember reading something about companies fazing them out due to them being more dangerous for the driver in an accident.
Like I said I may be pulling that out of my butt, I’m sure someone will be along in a sec to tell me so and telling me I’m a poor.

Part of it was actually because of legislation change and not having to meet previous length requirements or something along those lines.

Length laws went away which were often a reason for them...
Typically less room, noisier and a rougher ride than conventionals
Still the main type in Europe....
ETA - that is a Freightliner FLT in the OP.

Good to know
I was wondering how such a poor design ever existed in the first place

I remember them quite well in my trailer park as a kid. Remember sitting in the cab of one of my neighbors along with his kid about the same age and him swinging it up so he could get to the motor. We thought that was so cool.
Never really thought about why they went away but it touched a fond memory. Thanks for the info.

I can't imagine a wreck in a cab over would end well. You're literally the first one there.

Length laws used to measure the entire truck. Now I think it's just the trailer.
