CPM missed the tournament one year with an RPI in the 20's IIRC.

Why wouldn't this have happened a lot earlier then?

They were playing teams that honestly are better than them

Why not
Smaller conference auto bids will be slotted in as 4 seeds based on RPI

The committee wants LSU in postseason. Its good for attendance and viewership, which brings in $$$.
I don’t think it really cares. If LSU is going to get any nod it’s because it’s defending champ.

quote:right same reason you never see major conferences as a 13-16 seed in march madness. They have plenty of conferences whose auto bid winner is a team with a 100+ RPI. 4 seeds are pretty much reserved for bad conferences auto bid winners. If lsu makes the postseason they’ll have an RPI in the 30s at worst. If we’re on the bubble come selection day and get in we’d be a 3 seed. Same case for any at-large bubble team.

Some teams to pull for today:
Xavier over Kentucky - 2pm - Xavier is a top 30 RPI team that we have two wins over. A win would continue to boost our RPI. And also Kentucky's coach is a dickbag. - NEVERMIND, GAME IS CANCELLED
Stony Brook over Sacred Heart - 3pm - more wins for our opponents the better. Probably not a huge impact from this one, but still worth it to hope they win.
South Florida over Florida - 5:30pm - we want Florida to finish under .500.
ULL vs Jackson St - pray for rain. We need ULL to get their RPI up a little bit and this game won't help.
Auburn over Georgia Tech - 6pm - Probably not a huge RPI help, but a league prestige boost and a knock on an ACC team competing for a post season bid.
Nicholls over Houston - 6:30pm - Houston kind of sucks, but they are a Big 12 team now. And we have a win over Nicholls.
UC-Irvine over UCLA - 8pm - no impact this year, but UCLA is having a terrible year and is about to frick over their student athletes by moving to the Big Ten and I want one of their infielders to transfer to LSU.
ETA: Xavier getting a win over Kentucky could push them toward being Q1 wins for us. Xavier and South Florida are the two teams that could help us the most today.
ETAA: Welp, Kentucky and Xavier is cancelled due to impending weather. Vandy and Louisville probably also about to be cancelled.

bruh, just winning 4 of the next 6 gets us into a regional. your looking too deep into it

That leaves these three teams fighting for what will be 1 MAYBE 2 spots.
Florida
Ole Miss
LSU
I would just like to add, frick Florida.

quote:Well, when they played Miss State (first series) and Florida (2nd series, first home), LSU was still top 5. Kinda cruising, playing to see what we have, getting the new guys some SEC experience.quote:

Then there was the road series at Arkansas, who's still a top 5 team, and suddenly you're 2-7 and a bit shell-shocked.
Beat Vandy game 1, fricked around and lost game 2, then another 10 run rule because we don't have the depth to win a game 3 in this conference... 3-9.
Road series at current #1 Tennessee, you look up and you're 3-12 and the season is about to go in the shitter.
There seems to be a newfound sense of both urgency and confidence now.

quote:Not sure that can happen.
Would much rather play our way into a 2 seed tho
Looking at the SEC, Tennessee is now taking their turn at #1. A&M is #3, Kentucky #4, Arkansas #5. Those 4 will be National Seeds.
South Carolina is #13, Miss State #14, Georgia is #15. Maybe 2 of them will host regionals.
SC has UGA and Tenn left.
Miss State has Ark and Mizzou left
Georgia has SC and Florida
After that, you have Alabama, Vandy, Ole Miss, LSU, Florida fighting for spots.
Ole Miss- 25-22 overall, with 7 games left. Home series vs A&M, at Southern Miss midweek, at LSU final series. That's tough, I think they're out.
Alabama-at Troy midweek, LSU at home, at Auburn. 29-18 overall. I think they can get a bid, but we should be able to pass them overall.
Florida- South Fla midweek, home vs Kentucky, at UGA. 24-23 overall. They will have to finish strong, because the overall record sucks. Questionable whether they get a bid.
Vandy- home vs Louisville midweek, home vs Tennessee, at Kentucky to close. 32-16 overall. That's a brutal finish, but I think they are in, and they could host a regional if they finish strong.
That leaves LSU:
we're going to be behind the 4 national seeds, the 3 currently ranked in the mid-teens, and Vandy (that series win in the Box seals it). That puts us as potentially the 9th team taken from the SEC. We may well be the 2nd best team in the regional, but I don't know if that gets us a 2 seed.

It's time to put up, or shut up. We can make our bones by winning both those series
Posted on 5/7/24 at 3:08 pm to Scoob
There is no difference between a 2 and 3 seed. Just make it in and go on a run. All that matters.
Posted on 5/7/24 at 3:17 pm to Alt26
I can be more definitive. Lose either of the next two series and they can pack the gear away. There won't be a postseason. Not sweeping Auburn and Missouri has put them in this position. It's not impossible, but it's going to be tough.

I think the two games we let slip away in the first half of conference play (Florida and Vandy) were more detrimental than not sweeping Auburn and Mizzou.
But ultimately you could reasonably see about 4 more wins on our record with not a whole lot of changes to how things played out.
