Perhaps it is a case of LSU not wanting to OVERSPEND for average players?
Like it or not, college coaches now have to take on the role of GM...in a marketplace where there is no salary cap or even employment contracts. So he has to evaluate every NIL consideration. Let's say LSU is paying $150k for guys like Guillory, McKinley, Reliford, etc. Let's also say they are paying some of their higher rated defensive players (like Perkins) a bit more. Maybe $300k. Then here comes an average, late offseason add at DT who leverages your desperation into a $500k NIL deal. He's now your highest paid defensive player. An "ok" player who has never played a snap for you. Whether he comes out and dominates or can't even put his helmet on the right way, his NIL deal has now "reset the market" for your team. If mediocre players are getting $500k, the stars on your team are going to demand much more.
The DT situation is not ideal going into the season. No one is going to deny that. But LSU does have bodies (not unlike the 2014 season where the DL started off bad, but progressively got better as the season went along). Showing you are willing to grossly overpay out of desperation could have FAR reaching effects well beyond just this season.
Should LSU have tried to do more to mitigate this situation? From the outside looking in, yes. But overpaying for mediocre talent doesn't fix the issue long term. It arguably makes this worse.

This could very well be the reason. I'm not knocking that. I would also agree than you aren't winning championships if you have to build your roster thru the portal. HS recruitng and dev are key in CFB still. Retention is where money should be spent.
Portal guys should be cherry on top

If we don't get some interior DL we're going to look like the 2021 LSU defense getting ripped up the middle by Kentucky.

I wish BK would say we're not even going to play with a defensive line to really make you people start crying.

But paying over $1mm for a decent DL isn’t the answer either
If he stops the run in the SEC, yes it is

I dont think anyone is expecting us to be dominant. Thankfully, we dont need to be dominant (yet). The scheme alone cost us games last year. We had NO DL coach last year and the pieced together line we did have got better with the attention of an 82 year old senior citizen (love you, Pete).
You're selling yourself short if you think this defense wont at least be competitive.

Will you take a public paintball shot to the balls infront of Tiger stadium if you are wrong?

You followed up your own dipshit post with one defending it before anyone had posted anything. Even other “hot takers” like this can play the game better. You have failed conclusively.

This might be true, but market rate is market rate. And it's the job of the coaching staff to figure it out. Going into year 3 with no DT's is a major problem. It's Kelly's job to fix it. The quality of the DL has gone down every year that BK has been here. It wouldn't be as big of a deal if the situation was improving, but the exact opposite is happening.

Well. We’re in better shape than last year because at least we have a D-Line coach.

Nice this guy took time away from protesting and consuming soy on a college campus (and may have even pulled his nose ring out) and posted here today.

you only say this if you don’t have money to spend. I wish fans would make up their minds. Is NIL money an obstacle for LSU or not? Seems like this changes every week
Use the $$ wisely, all I’m saying. Nothing changing here.
