re: Is Vitello a better recruiter and offensive coach than Jay

Maybe but JJ is better at winning national titles. Which do you prefer?

Saying which coach is “better” among elite coaches is getting so old. Jay has done much more in his career than Vitello. With that being said, Vitello is still an elite coach and anyone who says otherwise is just fooling themselves.

Vitello is absolutely elite.
I like him & wont throw shade like most of LSU’s fan base
But 4 different SEC teams have won the CWS over the last 5 years and none of them have been Tennessee
Win a chip & I’ll call him elite

And how many titles they have dipshit?

Vitello took over a moribund baseball program and has turned them into an SEC contender. He also has built a fanbase from not much and baseball at UT is "on the map."
Jay Johnson has done more than Vitello as he has taken two different programs to the CWS champ series and won one NC.

helps to play in a tiny park, no?
i love how people just want to completely dismiss 1 of his 2 years.
what was wrong with the offense his first year? offenses weren't exactly lighting it up during cpm later years were they?
kind of impressive they won so much then. btw i believe both times he advanced to the cws he had to go through sec teams.
again if you play at a park like tenn's you probably will lead in offensive stats. how has any of that worked out for vitello in omaha?

Yes CJJ assembled a great team last year, but 2 of his 3 years at LSU offensive has been lacking.

I am convinced some LSU fans would rather be Arkansas or Tennessee. Lets completely dismiss the championship against the toughest route possible. Why can't we be Arkansas or Tenn!
It's sad some of these LSU fans can't handle a down season. This same thread has already been done about Arkansas' coach who BTW finished in last place in the SEC West within the past decade. In 2016, Van Horn finished 26–29 overall (losing record) and 7–23 in SEC.
I actually like Vitello as a coach, but LSU has a coach who beat him in Omaha.

Tennessee won 3 straight SEC tournaments and 2 consecutive conference champs with delmonico. he had a 3rd and 4th place finish in Omaha. I don’t think you’ll find anyone saying that vitello isn’t a great coach, but pretending they haven’t had a successful coach before is dishonest.

Because he's coached double the amount of games.

This cannot be emphasized enough, It doesn’t matter which sport or which coach, it always happens.

Regardless, there is no excuse for CJJ to not even make the SEC tournament lead along the NCAA tournament

LSU was 12 years removed from a national title and 4 years removed from a runner up when Johnson took over
When Vitello took over Tennessee they hadn’t made the 64 team field in 13 years
I think context for everything is important

4 sec football teams won titles in a 6 year stretch. Do you judge Kentucky football coaches by winning a title or not?

This a worn out argument. Just stop.
Has Vitello won a NC? Come even close in Omaha?

Arizona pre Johnson-4 national titles and 16 Omaha appearances
LSU pre Johnson-6 national titles and 19 Omaha appearances
Tennessee pre Vitello- 0 national titles and 3 Omaha appearances
Do you think it’s logical to judge the two coaches by hardware?

People here will refuse to give Vitello credit for anything.
Prior to Tennessee he was at two schools with coaches that don't recruit off campus and built Omaha rosters, including the one that Arkansas made the finals with.
The bottom line is that LSU and Tennessee have a couple relatively young coaches that know what they're doing and will have both programs in Omaha competing for titles regularly.
One National Championship coach is about to be pushed out of his job. Another will probably retire in the next few years since he doesn't have the artificial advantages he once enjoyed and is finding out an even playing field is hard.
The league will never be easy. Hell the worst team in the league this year has been to Omaha 3 times under their coach.
