No it isn't. Why do you fake arse "country " bros feel such a need to lie about this? I'm sure it sucked that your neighbors dog came onto your 1/2 acre "ranch" and killed both of your chickens, but there's nothing routine about shooting dogs over chickens.
I don’t know about chickens but ranchers have a different take. You have way too much money invested in cattle to have one get injured from a dog messing around with them. A buddy of mine has a farm dog and he explained that the ones that survive learn not to go over into his or especially his neighbors fields. It’s an unwritten rule that you don’t tolerate dogs with the livestock.
That was his take anyway. I wouldn’t have killed a dog over a chicken but if you grow up with ranching I imagine you have a different perspective.

Her editor clearly wished to scuttle her chances.

I don't have to imagine. I grew up on a dairy farm. We also raised beef cattle.
I don't know anyone who ever shot their bird dog because they were stupid enough to let it get after some chickens.
She's a moron.

The same people that would gladly abort a baby are apoplectic about a vicious dog being put down.

I said basically the same thing. Its a dog, its their property they can dispose of it as they see fit - within reason. A quick, clean death from a gun shot is fine in my book.
exactly. And no one, farmer or not, enjoys being burdened with the task of putting a dog (or any other animal) down. They do it because it because they aren't an irrational basket of emotions and can understand the reasons.
The people that think dogs are some amazing special animal that should treated as some holy thing are delusional.
I like my catahoula because she kills rodents around my place. She loves nothing more than snatching a rat or chipmunk and shaking to death. Then hopefully its not quite dead so she can pick it up again and shake the remaining shred of life out of it.
Dogs are animals. They do animal things. Look at the lifecycle of a wolf or coyote pack. They are not only ruthless to other animals, but to members within their own pack. They are only nice to each other if it gains them something.
My sister had two of her "furbabies" kill a mid-sized stray dog that happened to wander into their yard a few weeks ago. Killed it "for fun". Talk about a reality check.

A real rancher would be offended by Noem calling herself that. And the dog wasn't a hunting dog. It was a house pet that was a hunting breed. She didn't train it. She brought it with her on a hunting trip thinking it would learn from the older dogs. The fact that she wrote that last part 20 years later shows that she still hasn't figured out that she was the problem.
She was humiliated on that hunting trip. I can imagine the other hunters switching from mocking her dog and scolding her for bringing an untrained dog on a hunt.
Finally, in the same killing spree, she killed a goat because it was smelly and would knock her kids over when they tried to play with it. What self respecting rancher would let their kids play with that goat and get mad at the goat?

Aggressive dogs need to be put down. Why not DIY and save the vet bill?

Killing a bird dog puppy for killing chickens is abhorrent imo. This wasn't a pit bull, rottweiler, or mastiff that went bat shite crazy. A fricking bird dog puppy attacks birds, WTF does one expect? This happens occasionally, some puppies are overzealous in their hunting instinct.
She isn't destitute, she could've retired the puppy and/or rehomed him. Maybe she was having a bad day, maybe (i.e. probably) PMS played a role but Governor is about as high of a political post as she is qualified for, the Peter Principle applies to elected office too.
Then there's the billy goat shooting with the poorly placed shot AND the lack of planning to have more than enough ammo in hand shows very very poor planning, especially for a hunter. She is as qualified to be on deck for POTUS as the Vice-Cackler we have now, maybe a smidge better but these two acts disqualify her as fa as I'm concerned.

It’s so crazy watching y’all back into your tribal corners over this dog killing story.
Do rural people kill dogs for killing chickens or stealing eggs? Absolutely, happens all the time.
Is it a shitty thing to do? Yea, it kind of is.
Both things can be true.

Now that it has been explained to you that this is fairly common on ranches and farms, do you feel kinda silly about your emotional outburst?
