Great, Honest review.
It’s hard to nail anything but, you did
look Id be the first to say its not what it was
but stay away from the near west side of campus and its decent
it was never Aspen
East Austin is becoming nicer each year, was a blast in the 80s
6th street is for tourists ,Thats not Austin

Baton Rouge could be a lot better but it's also the capital of a poor, mostly rural state. Austin is the capital of a state with a GDP and population higher than a lot of countries. There's really no comparison in terms of potential.

Serious question: is Austin nice if you’re middle class with a family?
Seems like when I hear about cities being nice places to live, that typically means for rich people to enjoy.
I lived in Austin for several years and moved right as the big tech started to move in. Before all that housing was already starting to get expensive, but you could easily live comfortably in an apartment in the city limits on a modest salary. It's gotten out of control now and I think you have to live a little bit out in the suburbs to make it work, which means long painful commutes to work since I-35 and the mopac are really the only ways to get through town.

What income do you consider middle class?

So weird. Austin is the biggest US city with only one interstate.
620 and 71 has some awful traffic.
Fun fact. Austin to Houston are the largest US cities where an interstate highway isn’t directly connecting the two cities.

Br is only better 7 Saturdays per year

Yall obviously do not live in Austin area. . No one thinks it's great but the dweeb liberals tht live in the city. How many times have you had to step over a homeless person to get into an elite restaurant in Baton Rouge? That's an everyday occurrence in Austin. People living outside the city never go into it for anything.

Seafood restaurants in BR >>>>> Austin seafood. 'Bout it.

I disliked people from BR when I was at LSU because they only hung out with each other and never ventured out. It's like there'd be a large party and on one half of the room was people from all over LA and other states and the other half was just people from BR. Not one of them ever came up to me and introduced themselves.

The few hoods in Austin have nothing on the shithole that is north BR. Not to mention, Austin has less murders (60-70/year) than BR (100+) despite having almost five times the population (970k vs 220k).

This thread makes me sad. I loved BR (late 80's / early 90's) and I always wanted to move back to BR. I understand the post-Katrina 'changes' happened, and Austin has a much nicer overall metro area. But damn, I have so many great memories of my time in BR. This hurts to read.

I grew up in BR, went to LSU, graduated in 2022, and moved to Austin.
BR is a dump
Austin's parks and rec, nightlife, comedy and music scene, and downtown/urban environment is awesome.
As mentioned, only downside is high COL, activist politicians, and wokies.
But for someone single in their 20s-30s, ATX is the place to be.

It's a different city for sure in 2024 than that time period. At that time all of SBR was pretty reliably safe and decent, minus a few neighborhoods. That's really no longer the case, although there are still some nice areas.

Both are shite holes, just for slightly different reasons.

When the ghetto of a city includes houses that are as nice as the houses on Highland Rd, then that city is far better than the other city.

Eventually things change. Austin got ahead of a lot of cities. If they can’t address housing costs and some of their political issues, crime and overcrowding will eventually hurt their growth prospects.
New York was looking rough in the 1970s but it looked awesome by 2000. Looks like crap again. Hopefully it will figure things out again soon.
Houston has had its ups and downs. Like most cities, it seems to be struggling at the moment with crime and homelessness. The pendulum will swing back at some point.

Meh, Democrats are going to destroy both cities one way or another.
Austin may be nicer now, but we have seen what Californication does to everything. Just slower demise.

You could 10x the worst things about Austin and it will still be 100x better than Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge is an absolute dump as is 99% of Louisiana.

Austinites have been lamenting and missing “the old days” literally since the old days. Cranes have been a prominent part of the skyline since the 70s.
I don’t look at it as one city anymore. It’s made up of some really cool hoods and enclaves along with some areas that suck. It’s just a big city now.
