Thanks for a decent answer. This person simply didn't show up for court and forfeited his license. Now, he's older and wants to get it all straightened out. He's trying to avoid having the embarrassing machine in his vehicle.
This should be the least of his worries.
During sentencing, the judge would have informed your friend about the consequences for failing to comply with the penalty imposed.
This will not end well for him.

if old baw has done his community service and paid his fines then he should be good to go.

know of a man who decided, twenty years ago, that he was not going to put the breathing apparatus in his car. So, he just didn't drive. He also quit drinking. But, when he went to get his license, the DMV still insisted that he have the machine installed in his car. Their position was that you do not have the option to simply quit driving in lieu of having he breath tester in your car for the designated period of time.
Worked with a guy in Texas who had gotten a DUI in Arizona like fifteen years earlier. Arizona didn’t require the breath tester in your vehicle at the time if you lived out of state. But Texas had just changed their DUI laws somehow and because he had never had an interlock they told him he had to get one now.
He tried to go the lawyer route but the guy told him he basically had two options: either hire a lawyer back in Arizona and attempt to get it expunged since it was so old, but that could cost a fair bit of money and require him to spend time going back and forth a few times, which may not even work … or try to fight it here in Texas which probably wouldn’t work. So he ended up getting it installed and he parked at the extreme end of the company parking lot for the year.

What kind of job do you get with no ID and no background check that would show he’s unhirable?

Just because you get a DWI doesn’t mean you can’t have a great career at a company
You don’t need an ID to vote

I'm not well versed in DUI law like some with personal experience here but this guy must be pretty stupid to still not have a license 6 years after his DUI. A first offense in Louisiana is basically an expensive traffic ticket.

Only thing I can think of is he said frick it and didn’t go to court or do anything.
He basically got the dwi. Went to jail for the night. Got bonded out. And never did anything after that

In Louisiana, the license usually gets suspended for a period of time which varies depending on the circumstances. When that period of time expires, the DMV will give you your license back unless it is also suspended for some other reason.
What do you mean by "unprocessed"?

He never went through the whole process of the breath machine, getting a lawyer, court dates, etc. Said he went to court once, judge suspended license, did some community service at Bethany church, and didn't go any further.
I'll have to dig more next time I see him at the bar getting hammered funneling Rumplemintz and driving 30 miles home in his squatted 2025 F250. (at least that's the OT's opinion)

So he just quit doing what he was supposed to because of no money?
Posted on 4/25/24 at 4:27 pm to Shexter
Get a lawyer and be prepared to pay, there is some dollar amount that gives “your friend” the answer he wants going forward.

Yes
Military > caught a bullet > PTSD > military disability > free time > boredom > drinking > DUI

He probably could’ve worked something out with the system if he would’ve told them his background instead of just neglecting it

Does not compute.

We have become a nation of rules, policies and fines. Laws are irrelevant. Menial civil servants truly run the country.
I have a question on the vehicle breather thing. I always like to think of workarounds to the governments idiocy. What is stopping you from putting it in some other car, or buying like a used shitty car but not driving it and then selling it a year later. But driving another car?

You have to bring it in every so often and they check it. I assume they look at its usage.

If he went to court and did what the judge ordered him to do, including the community service, then what I said above is correct.
His license gets suspended for a period of time, depending on whether he flunked the breath test, refused the breath test or whatever. After that time period expires, he gets his license back. That is the way it works in Louisiana.
