I used to go to NYC during the summers and just hang around the comedy clubs getting wasted.
One thing I learned is anything goes after 10 in the sense you'll get the polished stuff for the 7 or 9 shows.
The "working it out" stuff happens at the later shows for the semi known people. Not gonna lie. It was dang near 50/50 whether they was gonna get booed by some drunks. Seen some mediocre sets come through there even by Attell at 1AM.
That comedy cellar underground...I think 80% of the people got booed of the stage.

A lot of comedians have scripted crowd work with a planted heckler.

quote:Have you seen an actual show, or just the crowd work stuff on social media? His live show is like 70-80 minutes with maybe 15-20 minutes of crowd work. The dude's actual set is pretty damn funny. He is quick with the crowd work and obviously uses his appeal or ick to the female audience members to his advantage, but his actual set is pretty good.
I think Matt Rife is pretty funny for the most part, but i also think he's a one trick pony. i've seen enough of his stuff now that the formula / routine

Dave Attell will slaughter a crowd...and he writes great jokes.

Most of the stuff you get at comedy shows is crowd work today. They'll play off the crowd. You're not getting a hour of straight material.

Rogan has brought this back, and even Redban's club. They allow zero recording by anyone. Maybe they allow the comedian to record their set, but no phones or cameras are allowed. This day and age in comedy everything you say can and will be used against you. Working things out on stage got damn near impossible. It seems clubs are finally protecting acts again now.

Mark Normand getting topics from the crowd and making a joke on the spot is pretty hilarious.
Plus he's Nola guy.

Political Correctness and Totalitarian Progressivism ruined comedy.
Along with pretty much everything else that used to be great about American culture.

Crowd work is unique to each show so it gives them unlimited content for social media to promote themselves.
They can’t show their actual jokes because those are copyrighted and no one would attend if you knew all the jokes of a tour beforehand…so without these crowd work clips it would just be recycled jokes from previous specials only which would get old quick
It hasn’t ruined anything, social media has just allowed a platform for crowd work to be seen. If anything, the real issue is now people in the crowd are more obnoxious with heckling because of it

stand ups going to on podcast only to pontificate about the art of stand up has ruined comedians for me.

All I know is Shane Gillis’ special “Beautiful Dogs” is one of the funniest specials I’ve ever seen.

I dunno, seems clever enough from what little I have seen.
Sorta like Andrew The Dice Man Clay… not necessarily for everyone.

I bet he is fun as shite to get a few drinks with.

He's pretty good at what he does and gets a following because he's an attractive guy that's quick witted.
Honestly just sounds like you're jealous.

His act is almost entirely 100% crowd work and its pretty godawful.

They don’t want to burn material for clips so crowd work is easy to post.
It’s just supposed to get your attention so you go see them live or watch their actual act when a special comes out

It's not a good comparison, but I watch Dave Portnoy pizza reviews for a similar reason
You're right. Dave Portnoy to John Mulaney for comedy is a terrible comparison.

Jimmy Pardo said on his podcast one time that the late night talent bookers didn't give him a regular shot because he didn't have an act. He has an album I think of all crowd work.
