His early stuff wasn't bad IMO. But yes, he fell off quickly.
Wife and I are going to see Nate Bargatze tomorrow in Laffy. For not cursing, his stuff isn't terrible.

This is actually a pretty solid fall back position for most things in life...

I disagree. Standup comedy is not ruined. This is probably the best era of standup comedy, and crowd work has its audience who love that shite.
The only thing that hasn’t changed is female comedians still suck.

I don't know anything about how stand up actually works or what you call the different elements of the craft. I don't think Bargatze's jokes are all that funny, but I stay pretty engaged just listening to his stories and the jokes are secondary. Same with someone like Mulaney.
I'll listen to both tell the same mediocre jokes because I find the act of telling them amusing - is that delivery?

That's kinda what I'm worried about... my hands are tied as my wife planned it

No, you just don’t know how stand up comedy works. You need to watch the actual specials. They do crowd work because that’s how they get new clips to post. Their actual act is just being repeated every city they go to so they can workshop it for an eventual special. If they were posting their actual act, you would just be seeing the same jokes over and over again, and no one would have any reason to watch their special because they have already heard the entire routine.
Go watch an actual special instead of 30 second clips on tik tok.

I don't know stand up either, but I guess either delivery or structure or story telling

Who is the dyslexic guy? I remember the crowd work but not the name.

It's not a good comparison, but I watch Dave Portnoy pizza reviews for a similar reason (and I'm not a huge Barstool/Dave fan on anything of substance)

Matt Rife is a pretty good example of this. His act is almost entirely 100% crowd work
No it's not...
Have you even seen one of his shows, or did you just see him on a You Tube short?

Yea, not sure what these guys are watching.

And I will add......
YouTube Shorts have all had a terrible impact on standup.
The editing required for a stupid one minute video squashes all but the most basic jokes, so you're left with a heavily edited "joke" with all laugh and timing removed, or this bullshite crowdwork from comedians who aren't all that great at crowd work.
I just don't bother with watching the short format for standup comedy.

I don't know if it ruined it, but in the era of men trying to get pregnant it's pretty insane that so much material is being left off to the side
Society needs jesters to help us contextualize the ridiculousness of ourselves and the ruling class.
We've basically eliminated jesters in this country. And that's only emboldened the crazies.

think there is varying degrees of crowd work
You have traditional comedians like Pryor and Carlin.
You have some that did some crowd work like Jimmy Carr.
And you have some that only work the crowd like Matt Rife.
Think it just depends on your preference.

Going Nate Bargatze tomorrow night at the Cajundome. Can't wait.

I think Matt Rife is pretty funny for the most part, but i also think he's a one trick pony. i've seen enough of his stuff now that the formula / routine has started to stand out and become a little annoying. that said, he's still pretty quick on his feet. this kind of comedy just isnt really my thing though.

He became famous for being Handsome Squidward's doppelganger
