The funny thing is that Mondo would never fail to make the US national team.

First, fluke flameouts at the Olympic and World trials are very rare. Dan O’Brien is the one high profile example.

Otherwise, the biggest misses are almost always the 3rd best discus thrower missing out, when he isn’t even top 10 globally, or an event where the US has the top 5 contestants and by definition, they can only bring the top 3.

Mondo is so dominant that on his off days, he gets 2nd or 3rd in the world, and even those are very rare. And while US pole vaulting is strong, this isn’t like the men’s 100 hurdles where the field is loaded with potential world champions.

To say it’s not even up for debate is laughable.

I never said he shouldn’t be mentioned, but to say he’s the GOAT with no debate needed…pfft!

It's probably also worth mentioning that the record of 20 1 1/2" stood for 20 years, then a French vaulter beat it once in 2014, and now mondo makes.jumping 20 1 1/2" look easy.

And everyone thought the same about his Dad who was a young phenom in high school....even had a blurb about him in Sports Illustrated in about 1980. The fact his Dad never made an olympic team despite being one of the top vaulters in the world at the time I believe informed Mondo's decision to represent Sweden.

I agree with your last part.

That his dad couldn’t beat out American pole vaulters who lost at basically every world championship and Olympics to vaulters from other countries probably did play a role.

The Mondo Sweden switch happened in 2015, when his own camp didn’t realize what a superstar he would be. And who can blame them? His success is unprecedented

When was the last time you saw a pole vaulter on U.S. television promoting a product?

And Sweden is the size of California and the population of North Carolina. Not that impressive.

If he was here, he’d be making ‘diddly squat’ and struggling to find endorsements. He’s a multi-millionaire and global superstar.

And we have someone that actually knows something about the difference in T&F in Europe and here.

There was something about not making the US Olympic team was a concern. He was just beaten at the NCAAs before that first Olympics he competed in if people remember correctly.

Have a great respect for those doing pole vaulting. About 50 ways things can go wrong (and I mean badly).
